I've seen quite a few of Hunter's videos, and this is the best one yet. Really nails the American conservative voter.

    What an excellent perspective.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles." —Jeff Cooper

Dude hits the nail on the head. I think I'm going to be using "identity conservative" in a lot of conversations in the future.
if modern agriculture continues to follow the path it's on now, it's finished. The food-growing situation may seem to be in good shape today, but that's just an illusion based on the current availability of petroleum fuels. All the wheat, corn, and other crops that are produced on big American farms may be alive and growing, but they're not products of real nature or real agriculture. They're manufactured rather than grown. The earth isn't producing those things.. petroleum is! -Masanobu Fukuoka

Yep. Ron needs to make a caricature of himself into a brand and sell it like Pepsi and Coke. Very soon. He needs to hire a Madison Avenue firm. They need to teach him to spin his rhetoric in a way to get votes, NOT explain himself! And advertize him the same way Madison Avenue would advertize WalMart, Chevrolet, or Budweiser. Ron can "change hearts and minds" as he talks of but he doesn't seem to realize that, while he needs to do it decisively, decisively and superficially will work quite nicely. 97% of the voters are NEVER going to deeply reflect on Ron's policies, even if they overwhelmingly support him and vote for him. And he needs every last one of those Simple Simon votes. I don't know that his current approach is effective or efficient toward that objective.

I've never thought about it in those terms before. Every time I bring up Ron Paul to my mother, the only argument she has against him is "he's so old" and the only reason she can give me for her support of Palin is "She's a good christian mother." Afterwards, we have a long discussion about their political views and agendas, she agrees with Ron Paul, but she adores Palin...I don't get it.

I'm from Minnesota, too and that voice was the first thing I noticed. So irritating.

But he absolutely nailed the content perfectly.

It's interesting, I started out as an "identity" voter. In Britain, I voted for Tony Blair simply because I liked him more than Michael Howard (the Conservative leader). Now, you'd have to threaten to shoot me before I voted for those socialist Labour criminals. And when I started out following American politics, I was attracted to the Huckabees and the Palins. Only after taking the time to read some books and ponder the issues did I realise how much sense Ron Paul made.

I think the key to converting people to Ron/Liberty is 1) Work on those whose "identity" leans conservative in the first place (as it'll surely make for easier work) and 2) Give them one key, accessible book to read. From there, they will hopefully want to read and think more about the issues.

The point is solid, but would it reach a broader audience if someone else were talking? :P

I was actually going to e-mail Mr. Hunter today and ask that he put something together on "Celebrity Politicians" (Obama, Palin). Amazing how he is always one step ahead of me. He is the true spokesman in the media for our cause and his message should be embraced no matter how it sounds.

I would wager that most people consider Hunter's type of Southern accent to be "charming" or "genteel." There are far worse accents to be subjected to in this country (Bostonian, rural Appalachian, bland Midwestern, Sarah Palin), and I've always thought he uses the rhythm of his voice well in making his points.

Jack Hunter's a victim of the very same concept he relays in his video. He needs moar identity to go with his philosophy!

I completely agree with what he says. In fact, I struggle with it myself. I've listened to some politicians (In this case, Herman Cain) and have tried reasoning the idea of actually supporting him just because he's an outsider who worked hard for everything he has. I quickly snap out of it, but it's pretty easy for me to fall into the "identity conservatism" crowd if I'm not careful.

Has anyone visited this site on youtube?
The comments are amazing......many are perfect examples of what Jack talks about in the video.

Rated the thread 5 stars. This is what a lot of people are talking about with regards to the changes Ron needs to make if he truly wants to win the office. Identity peeps way outnumber philosophy peeps. You have to get them on board if you want to win the election.

Great insight from Jack Hunter, as usual.

I like his voice, but I am from the south. What really grates on my nerves is Cain's speeches. I know he is known for being a dynamic speaker but for some reason I can't stand to listen to him.

he has handed us a few hints and the lay of the land in terms of a primary political primer. this is why
the debates are going the way they are. the GOP knows WHY the current crop of candidates is closer
stance~wise esoterically to barry goldwater's 1964 run than they are the 1988 reagan/bush transition.

This is the perfect example of what the author of the video was saying, not necessarily in political terms but in terms of accent/speech-identity. Being a minnesotan, you obviously don't identify with a Southern accent.

Have you shown her this picture of him. Nice physique for a 75 year-old grandpa I think.
Tell her he's very healthy, very health-conscious, still cycles, doesn't suffer from old-age ailments & is a doctor so I guess he knows a thing or two about taking care of himself. Further, he's a "compulsive exerciser"

Well, Ron's a good father, grandfather & great grandfather & he's raised his children well, unlike Palin whose kid popped a kid (I don't know why any social-conservative like your mother would consider Palin a "good mother" after that). Tell her that Ron has been married to the same wife for 54 years, raised his children well, he's delivered 4000 babies, has 5 children, 18 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren & he's the epitome of a conservative "family-man", he's a pious Christian who always believes in putting God first & believes in following the path of Jesus Christ of non-violence & love & is staunchly pro-life, etc etc (do the routine, man, you should know what your mother would find palatable & I'm sure Ron has it covered)

Yup, he also needs to bring out things about himself that make him a good & personable person in order for people to be able to associate with him on a personal level which he seldom does & of course, he needs to word his message in terms that ordinary people can relate to & understand.

There is enormous inertia — a tyranny of the status quo — in private and especially governmental arrangements. Only a crisis — actual or perceived — produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes politically inevitable
