'This revolution was a curse': Economic woes test Egypt
'People in the neighborhood are talking about going back to the streets for another revolution — a hunger revolution'

    New York Times, MSN
    June 10, 2011

Egypt’s economy, whose inequities and lack of opportunities helped topple a government, has now ground to a virtual halt, further wounded by the revolution itself.

The 18-day revolt stopped new foreign investment and decimated the pivotal tourist industry. The annual growth slowed to less than 2 percent from a projected 5 percent, and Egypt’s hard currency reserves plunged 25 percent.

In a region where economic woes enraged an entire generation, whether and how Egypt can fix its broken economy will be a crucial factor in determining the revolution’s success. It could also influence the outcome of the revolts across the Arab region, where economic troubles are stirring fears of continued instability, authoritarian crackdowns, or even a backlash against what had appeared to be a turn toward Western-style market reforms.

“People are angry,” said Hassan Mahmoud, a resident of a slum near Cairo. He expected a better life after the revolution, he said, but instead he was laid off from his $10-a-day job in a souvenir factory. “People in the neighborhood are talking about going back to the streets for another revolution — a hunger revolution,” he said.

    The Egyptian Revolution
The problem with the Egyptian Revolution, which is being acted out in the streets of Cairo and Alexandria with huge demonstrations, is that no one knows what the revolutionaries want.

Fanning the Flames of Revolution in Egypt
As Mubarak's Egypt succumbs to revolution, little is none of the forces fueling the protest, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, but moreso the role of the Communist Party of Egypt in revolution's inception and current activities - thus revealing an Islamo-Communist connection.

    Turmoil in Egypt
It’s much too early to say what will be the outcome of the present popular uprising in Egypt against Mubarak’s dictatorship, but there are several scenarios that can be analyzed as possible outcomes.

    Egypt's Present Path
Though much of the world waits with bated breath to see what type of government Egypt will end up with, the shape of Egypt's government is almost a foregone conclusion.

    Egypt's Problem of Leadership
Egypt faces a problem of leadership: Will the nation find a new dictator to replace Mubarak, or will free the people by insisting upon constitutional changes that will chain the government?

    Egypt: Did Anything Important Happen?
When the Los Angeles Times confirmed that protests that started in January in Tunisia and then moved to Egypt were spreading to Algeria, Bahrain, Libya, Morocco, Cameroon and Kuwait, many concluded that they were driven by unhappy citizens connected via the internet.

    Question.

I keep hearing the phrase, "Arab Spring". Is this the CIA code name for these sponsored "revolutions"?

  5. #4
yeah, my UCF Modern Hebrew Culture keeps using that term.

like being Arab has anything to do with being pissed over poverty, corruption, and ineffectual despotism.

It's touch and go at this moment from the Egyptians I know who live here. But it was always going to get worse before it got better.

I'm waiting for that one person, a dictator, who will promise them food, wealth, and pride. History repeats.

You don't think there is ANY chance at all that the situation will improve? That's a sad outlook on humanity. I hope you're wrong.

Why would the United States allow that to happen? We need an enemy.

most revolutions (French , Russian) are followed shortly by another revolution that leads to one person rule. but not always; The Philippines in 1986, Eastern Europe in the late 80s successfully transformed to democracy.

This is what happens when you are only against something...

What happens when you get rid of the thing you are against? What would happen if the FED was eliminated tomorrow? People don't believe in liberty... people don't believe in sound currency... people don't believe in competition... people don't believe in free markets...

People do believe in central planning and a new central planner would come in and replace it. People who are only against something have no answers because if the thing they are against is eliminated they have no clue what to do next.

It is the people who are for something that have that answers and inspiration...

over 7000 military tribunals for the peace demonstrators in Egypt... now in prison

Obama gave Egypt an additional $2 Billion of our tax money

IMF Gives Egypt $3 Billion with 20% of the IMF "LOANED" budget from the US... add another $600 Million from US taxpayers to Egypt.

$2.6 Billion US taxpayer AID to Egypt for the CIA/CFR/Mi6/etc orchestrated Arab Spring... which is probably an additional Billion in US Black OPS funds.

The revolution is the easy part. It unites all of the groups who didn't like the former government. The hard part is to then get those often very different groups to agree on what should be done afterwards. No matter what happens, some group or groups will always be disappointed with the results. Does that make it a "failure"? We weren't there to recall but our own revolution had simliar problems and there were people who wished we had stayed part of Britain (or France or whatever country controlled their state). Some too would have preferred to be individual states- instead of United States.

No idea. A more pointed question in my mind is who, exactly, is funding these little parties that are unfolding oh-so-coincidentally, and what might the topography be of the control structures? Who is ultimately inciting these uprisings and how are the messages set into action? Anyone suggesting that these have been organic movements is either an idiot or is working for "them". Things simply do not work like this in the wild, so to speak.

Almost universally "yes", because invariably the dominant group uses force to impose its scheme upon those not interested in it. The only possibly legitimate case for such imposition is where the minority group seeks a circumstance where someone's rights are by necessity violated. In such cases the only legitimate response is to disallow such institutional violation, but that is never the case. The usual scenario involves the dominant group imposing equally egregious restrictions upon the minority. As history shows us, nearly every revolution wherein a perceived tyrant is ousted results in supplanting the old regime with a new tyrant of a superficially different cloth. Our history is lousy with such examples. The bottom line is that empire is a ghastly curse upon the race of men and that there is no variation on the basic theme that is either just or morally legitimate because empire is by its very nature destructive of human freedom. Freedom and empire are utterly antithetical and violently antagonistic. Where the one exists, the other cannot. They are mutually exclusive and repulsive opposites. The best condition which can be achieved under empire is a state of pretty slavery. Sadly, the great majority of people are more than willing to accept this under the misapprehension that it is the same thing as freedom.

This is the problem with Progressive and Neo-Conservative foreign policy. The very idea that some savage from the Middle East can be 'civilized' and conform to our absurd beliefs concerning democracy and secularism is preposterous. A realistic stance would be to displace Mubarak, whose fall was inevitable, and install yet another dictator that would work in favor of Western interests. An ideal situation would be to have Egypt as an outright colony of a Western power, and all dissent would be met with a sudden bullet to the skull. A superior option than creating some sort of banana republic where the Muzzie brotherhood could keep electing savage, lowly dessert-dwellers one after another.

Egyptian Presidential Palace on Fire, Here's the kicker, Russian news is stating the protesters their MOTOV cocktails, New York Times is stating they threw fireworks @ the palace.

    Russian Voice: http://english.ruvr.ru/2013_02_01/Ca...alace-on-fire/

    Cairo presidential palace on fire

    Photo: AFP
The Egyptian presidential palace is on fire after taking dozens of Molotov cocktails from angry demonstrators demanding justice for the killers of more than 50 people in Egypt’s latest unrest.

Many also shouted that the government must step down.
The deployment of water cannon has so far failed to disperse the crowd.
There were similar demonstrations in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez.
Cairo: Protesters clash with security at presidential palace
Egyptian security used water cannon and fired shots into the air as protesters threw petrol bombs and stones into the grounds of the presidential palace in Cairo on Friday.
The clashes came amid rallies in several cities against Islamist President Mohamed Morsi following unrest that killed 56 people, mostly in Port Said, after 21 residents were sentenced to death over a football-related riot in 2012.
The night sky was lit by fireworks set off by protesters above the north Cairo palace, as the crackle of gunshots fired from the military's Republican Guard from behind the palace walls filled the air.
The Republican Guard appealed for calm and accused the protesters of trying to enter the palace, in a statement reported by the official MENA news agency.
Police, who had initially withdrawn inside the compound, advanced on protesters using armoured cars while firing tear gas.
Elsewhere, thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest against Morsi, whom they accuse of betraying the revolution that brought him to power last June.
Scores of protesters skirmished with riot police several hundred metres (yards) from Cairo's Tahrir Square, witnesses said, and two were wounded by birdshot fired by police.
But the clash was far less intense than last week's deadly unrest which killed 56 people, most of them in Port Said, where violence erupted after 21 residents were sentenced to death over football-related violence a year ago.
Thousands of people protested in Port Said on Friday calling for Morsi's removal, unfazed by the military deployment in the canal city, and similar marches took place in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.
Egypt’s National Salvation Front urges anti-Morsi protests
Egypt's National Salvation Front (NSF), a coalition of opposition parties and groups, has urged people to take it to streets against President Morsi’s regime.
The Front accuses Morsi of imposing his will on the nation and ruling in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood Islamists.
Egypt’s police, on their part, called for peaceful and civilized protests.
Earlier, a number of opposition leaders signed a deal renouncing violence and backing dialogue at a meeting in Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
Mass demonstrations on Friday in Egypt
The National Salvation Front of Egypt has announced a mass meeting and demonstration on Friday against the policies of the current authorities.
A march is to be held with the goal of the marchers being the residence of President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo.
Among the demands of the opposition: the resignation of the country's leadership, the abolition of the new constitution and the dissolution of the parliament's upper house.
The National Salvation Front issued a statement regarding the protest a few hours after the signing of a document called “non-Violence” at the Muslim University, Al-Azhar, by major political parties.
They are to be joined by leading Islamist movements including The Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafist party An-Nur.
Unrest across Egypt has not subsided since last Friday.
At least 60 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured in clashes.

We had our own uprisings- even after the Declaration of Independence and the Constition were signed. Our capital was burned in the War of 1812. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_of_Washington
