Default NH passes HB 544 the Knife Preemption Law

Most states have Firearm Preemption Laws. Laws that generally "prevent local jurisdictions from imposing ordinances more restrictive than laws passed by the state legislature and, in some cases, rescind local ordinances to ensure uniform firearm laws statewide." http://www.nraila.org/Issues/factsheets/read.aspx?ID=48

In 2010, State Rep. Jenn Coffey sponsored and helped pass a bill to remove state regulations on knifes in NH (except for felons.) This year, she sponsored and helped pass a bill to create a knife preemption law to prevent local governments from regulating knifes.

Rep. Coffey also endorsed Ron Paul for President. She is doing great work.

Should local communities be able to make their own laws even if they are stricter than state laws? If a community wants to make a law more relaxed couldn't this law force those communities to have stricter laws that are in line with the state?

Local communities are political subdivisions of the states. First came the states. The states created local communities. Than the states got together and created the national government. So from an historic perspective, local communities are only allowed to do what states let them. This is true from a legal perspective also as local communities may be ended by states and from time to time are.

There is the practical side too. With other 200 towns or cities in NH, it would be hard for people to figure out what the laws were if local communities were allowed to create their own gun laws, for example. And that's why around 45 states have as part of their state constitution according to the NRA that local communities aren't allowed to regulate guns in most cases.

From a liberty perspective, local communities should be allowed to create there own rules if they are more pro-liberty than state rules but never the other way around. That's how it works on many issues in NH. While NH, more than most states, encourages local governments to raise their own taxes and controll their own spending, it is not a home rule state.

Anyway you slice it, this is a wonderful law that helps protect the rights of the citizens of NH. And heck, it even helps the millions of folks that visit NH every year.

My understanding is only AZ and NH have this type of liberty. See this article about AZ, http://www.kniferights.org/index.php...d=100&Itemid=1

The thing is, there is no sales tax on knifes in NH
