How to help if you don't live in Iowa

There are a LOT of students who go to school in Iowa but might be at home for the summer in YOUR state.

We can be most beneficial to the campaign by starting a project in our own area to seek these people out and find a way to get them to the straw poll (since only Iowa residents of Iowa students are allowed to vote)

    Soooo Let the planning begin!

    In case there is confusion:

This is a project to sponsor, or adopt a student who might go to school in Iowa (therefore eligible to vote at the straw poll) but lives outside of Iowa.

I am ready to go forth with a website, but need feedback on a good URL

Find someone who goes to one of the schools on RPF or another site for Ron and have them get the school's yearbook. That should have the information on where all the kids live. Then you pick out the kids who live in your sphere of influence and you figure out how to contact them.

Great idea! I was thinking there was some kind of contact list for students available to other students. Perhaps meetup groups could help with this.

Anyone have ideas on a website URL that is short and available?

Anyone want to donate that to the cause as well? I can build the site if someone either wants to donate the hosting or donate the $15 to me to get it. I would but have literally zero dollars right now.

In the Iowa Straw Poll threads, someone posted a list of YAL groups in Iowa on Facebook, Meetup, etc. I think they are primarily on Facebook. The YAL site also has lists of groups by state.

Second there is a Iowans for Ron Paul 2012 group w/ roughly 400 members - post on that wall.

Third: make a list of IOWA colleges and universities, then google: <name of school> "ron paul" this will locate RP supporters attending various schools, some will be in-state, some out of state, some will be saying I went here before I graduated or dropped out. Use this route for schools that do not have a YAL chapter.

Contact/join the 4 IA Meetups and send your message.

College is wrapping up for the summer.

Before the students disperse, we really need to get YAL and other RP supporting students pumped on the straw poll NOW so they can not only plan to be at the straw poll, be involved in it, and vote - but also start planting the seed with their fellow students who will be spread across Iowas for the summer.

Free bus ride and free party to support RP in Ames!

YAL and other students in IA who support RP should plan a student event at the straw poll that will be a lot of fun and just geared towards students.

College students like to party, and that should not be done at the straw poll, but planning a fun evening event after the straw poll that is a responsible enough party for students and young people who support RP will motivate young people to get on a campaign bus and attend.

Make it like a Ronstock for students. Make a huge party with bands and fun stuff for young people outside of the straw poll event to really attract young people/students.

How about older people in the 60's and 70's? Outside of a free food and some entertainment at the straw poll, what can be done to motivate them to come out for Ron Paul?

Perhaps a short seminar that is advertised in fliers on how RP will make sure you medicare and social security is there for them as it will go bankrupt and he has the only plan to tide seniors over when that happens by using money form our bloated overseas empire?

How about a separate tent at the straw poll for religious conservatives, which IA has a lot of with a focus on RP wanting to make sure you maintain your right to practice your religion as you see fit due to RP's 1A support, his pro-life stance, etc.

Is it logistically possibly to seat different groups like young people, seniors and highly religious people to different tents/areas to give them a RP specific message to them?

The great thing about RP is that his ideas can appeal to everyone, but they don't always understand when they here soundbites on other RP ideas that might contradict their views.

    Just thinking out loud...

In regard to ^. I am not sure about the arrangements for the straw poll. I think those suggestions would be more directed toward the campaign. You bring up a good point about YAL though.

Are there any RPF members involved in YAL in Iowa.

Keep in mind this project is to try to get students who attend Iowa colleges but might be in your city for the summer. Most Iowa schools go back to school the week after the straw poll, so this project would require many of them to go back a week early. I don't know how most people do that anymore. Do they go back to school the weekend before or do they go back a week before? I just don't know.

I need to get a site set up ASAP though so I REALLY really need more people to weigh in on a URL name. It needs to be short, but still obvious what its about.

I am not trying to make executive decisions here, I need someone else to help me take charge. I am doing this because it was a good idea suggested by someone and no one else was taking charge.

I think a good start would be to gather a list of current RPF members who go to school at one of these Iowa colleges.

They could in turn get their friends who live out of state and support Ron Paul to sign up on the website.

One thing I'm working on today is getting some names of student organization at the four Catholic Colleges in Iowa (Loras, Clarke, Briar Cliff and St. Ambrose) just to send emails to urge support, where they can go to help and just leave my name in case they need help with grassroots projects if they're gung-ho about working for Dr. Paul.

definitely this. Although it is not short, you can say it in a sentence and it's easy to remember. It's also easy to read.

That is awesome!! If you get responses from students who support Ron Paul would you also have them contact me at RNevinRP2012 @ gmail.com about the sponsor a student project?

A website (with signups) will be launched this coming week (as soon as we can agree on a URL and I can get it up and running)

I am going to purchase the URL Monday evening, so people have til then to agree on something and put in more suggestions.

I would imagine that many of the out-of-state Iowa students live or work in nearby states in the summer. How about trying to set up group transportation (buses) from nearby cities?

Minneapolis, Minnesota -- 215 miles to Ames, Iowa
    Omaha, Nebraska -- 174 miles
Sioux Falls, South Dakota -- 256 miles
Kansas City, Missouri -- 229 miles
St. Louis, Missouri -- 394 miles
    Chicago, Illinois -- 357 miles
    Milwaukee, Wisconsin -- 358 miles
Rand Paul is in the top 1% of US Senators.

Community Colleges - they just show up the first day and generally have very few out of state students.

colleges/universities - dorms generally open up 1-2 weeks before the start of classes. It's common for colleges to require freshmen to live in dorms the first year, and then for them to seek off campus housing.

Off campus housing starts getting filled 1 month before classes start and the last week is PANIC! if students haven't found a place by then.

Having someplace students could stay as well as shuttle help, would help those seeking off campus housing and us as to votes.

as to clubs and associations, a community college may have 2 dozen, while a university often has hundreds. Only a few will be appropriate to contact. Stay away from Young Americans for Freedom. They are small gvmt conservatives, but pro-Israel, neocon foreign policy and anti-RonPaul.

Contacting Republican or Conservative clubs/associations could back fire and get them to vote for other candidates. Libertarian groups, if you can find them, should be good.
