    But Gates doesn't want to...

Antiwar Radio: Scott Horton Interviews Gareth Porter

Gareth Porter, independent historian and journalist for IPS News, discusses the internal political pressures on Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that may prevent him from inviting the US military to stay past 2011; how Obama has joined the Pentagon’s attempt to subvert the Status of Forces Agreement; how Moqtada al-Sadr’s influence may tie Maliki’s hands – whereby acquiescing to US wishes could very well cost him his job; the popular Iraqi outrage about Saudi Arabia’s brutal repression of Bahrain’s Shia majority and its longstanding financial support of militant Iraqi Sunni groups; the possibility of a regional conflagration along religious lines, pitting Iran against Saudi Arabia; and why Iraq’s military – which has close ties with the US military – wants the troop extension and might attempt a coup to make it happen.

I hate politicians. They are perfectly content screw everything up, and sometime intentionally sabotage things all to hell until a few months before the election. Then they make half-ass attempts to fix their scewups right before the election so that everyone will think they are a hero! I wouldn't be suprised if Obama came out and did some radical things about 6 months before the election. If he was smart, he would pull us out of the needless wars, and end the moratorium on drilling as a start.

There was no authority to stay that long to begin with the Congressional 'authorization' was only to the extent of the UN resolution which expired December 2008.

Was the war authorization tied to UN resolution?

Well I imagine all of us take issue with the legitimacy and legality of the war and subsequent occupation as a whole, beginning with the Authorization for the Use of Military Force against Iraq.

But is there a reason you're discounting the U.S. - Iraq Status of Forces Agreement?

We should leave immediately. We have created so many enemies already there that probably for next 100 years our great grand children will be groped when traveling.
