Israel's President has provoked an angry British backlash after accusing the English of being anti-semitic.
Israeli President Shimon Peres
Shimon Peres said England was 'deeply pro-Arab' and 'anti-Israeli'
In an interview with the Jewish website Tablet, Shimon Peres said the country has become pro-Arab and anti-Israeli.
"In England there has always been something deeply pro-Arab, of course, not among all Englishmen, and anti-Israeli, in the establishment," the 87-year-old said.
"They abstained in the [pro-Zionist] 1947 UN partition resolution... They maintained an arms embargo against us in the 1950s... They had a defence treaty with Jordan, they always worked against us."
"They think the Palestinians are the underdog... Even though this is irrational."
He added: "There is in England a saying that an anti-Semite is someone who hates the Jews more than is necessary."
Mr Peres, who was awarded an honorary knighthood by the Queen in 2008, said the UK had stood by as Israel had faced violence from Hamas.
"For eight years they fired and we refrained from retaliating. When they fired at us, the British didn't say a word."
There are several million Muslim voters, and for many members of parliament, that’s the difference between getting elected and not getting elected.

He also accused British MPs of pandering to Muslim voters in order to retain their seats in Parliament.
"There are several million Muslim voters, and for many members of parliament, that’s the difference between getting elected and not getting elected," he said.
His comments have angered both Jews and non-Jews in Britain.
James Clappison, the Conservative MP for Hertsmere and vice-chairman of Conservative Friends of Israel, said Mr Peres had got it "wrong".
In an interview with the Telegraph, he said: "There are pro- and anti-Israel views in all European countries. Things are certainly no worse, as far as Israel is concerned, in this country than other European countries."
David Cameron and Recep Tayyip Erdogan
David Cameron last week accused Israel of turning Gaza into a 'prison camp'
Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain, minister of Maidenhead synagogue, also told the newspaper: "It is a sweeping statement that is far too one-sided... The tolerance and pluralism here make Britain one of the best countries in the world in which to live."
The controversy follows remarks made by Prime Minister David Cameron who accused Israel of turning Gaza into a prison camp.
During a trip to Turkey last week, Mr Cameron said: "The situation in Gaza has to change. Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions. Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp."
