NH House passes bill which would make auto inspections happen every other year

The NH House passed HB 540 which would make auto inspections happen every other year instead of every year by a vote of 234 to 101.

Yes, one of the bad things about living in NH is auto inspections. However, this will make that less of a problem as they will only happen every other year if this becomes law.

According to Cam's FB, "Cameron DeJong This bill would save taxpayers $11 million per year and is revenue neutral for the state." I think he is talking about the costs of inspections which the typical person in NH tends to pay give or take $30 for every year. Though, some places charge more and some places give free inspections with a coupon. For example, when I donated blood a few months ago I got a coupon for a free inspection.

Bill calls for no annual auto inspections

Modern car design makes annual checks "archaic and unnecessary," said Rep. Daniel Tamburello, R-Londonderry. He and others said some mechanics take advantage of consumers, telling them they need repairs, just to make money.

The Union Leader just wrote an editorial against bi-annual auto inspection in NH in an effort to stop this bill in the NH Senate.

If you can nicely disagree with the article, please do with a comment. Even better, if you or someone you know lives in NH, please contact or have them contact the NH Senate Transportation Committee members and politely ask them to support HB 540.

Auto inspections can be pretty scammy and incredibly inconvenient...you have to arrange to leave your car at a garage, that is not necessarily trustworthy, get a ride to work or borrow/rent a car, then they call you 3-4 hours later and tell you that you need $500 in repairs on an almost new vehicle, which you can not check up on because you're at work, and if you decide to tell them to piss off, you have to pay them around $100 just for looking at your car. And get the friend to go to the garage with you so you can pick your vehicle up again.

Then you need to set the whole thing up again, or you just need to bite the bullet and pay up for the repairs that they allege your vehicle needs. At least that's how it works in Pennsylvania....unless you have a friend who owns a PA inspection-approved garage--then they'll let things go.

I was at the NH Senate Transportation Committee hearing today. Several State Reps spoke in favor of it. Several State Reps spoke against it. 8 or so car repair shop owners spoke out against it. Some government agents spoke out against it. Only one person just representing themselves spoke in favor of the bill, just ONE personl.

At this rate, the bill will not be recommended ought to pass by the committee. There is a chance it will pass, it just depends on how many regular folks contact the committee members between now and Thursday, 4-14, when the committee votes. Additionally, even if it fails to get an ought to pass recommendation in committee, there is still a chance that it will pass in the full Senate if enough regular folks call their Senators.

Do you or does anyone you know live in NH? Do you want to save HB 540? If so, it is very important that people call the committee members and politely explain that they are in favor of this bill.
    Here is how:

    1. Send out a polite email to the list of folks saying you support HB 540.

    molly.kelly@leg.state.nh.us

    2. Politely call the folks below and tell them you support HB 540. Feel free to give a reason.

Chairman Senator Jim Rausch (R-Derry) (Senate District 19) 271-8630
Vice Chairman Senator David Boutin (R-Hooksett) (Senate District 16) 271-2709
Senator James Forsythe (R-Strafford) (Senate District 4) 271-3096
Senator Molly Kelly (D-Keene) (Senate District 10) 271-2166
Senator Nancy Stiles (R-Hampton) (Senate District 24) 271-6933

    3. If you just get a message, it is ok to look up their personal home numbers here and call them when you think they will be awake and NOT sleeping, http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/sena...ers/sencom.asp

    4. Pass this info on to anyone you know that lives in NH and likely agrees with you on this issue.
