    Extortion at the Pump

    Dear Friend of Liberty,

Unless your state legislators hear from you soon, they are going to shoot the prices at the gas pump through the roof.

For years, the Maryland transportation trust fund held billions of tax dollars that the state collected with the intent of sustaining roads and infrastructure. In the last year, the state legislature allowed the O'Malley administration get away with raiding the fund to spend your transportation tax dollars on other projects.

That money is now gone. It's a trust fund that you just can't trust.

Maryland's transportation expenses are funded by an extreme level of taxation. We pay 18.4 cents per gallon to the federal government and 23.5 cents per gallon to the state government on every gallon of gas. For every $3.00 gallon of gas, you pay $3.42 due to taxes.

The average profit on a gallon of gas in Maryland is 9 cents. The tax on a gallon of gas in Maryland is 42 cents. For every gallon of gas sold in Maryland, the government is taking from you more than four times what the gas station is making in profit.

Transportation in our state is already funded. The governor and the state legislature are playing numbers games with your tax dollars so that they can funnel tax dollars to pet projects.

Instead of correcting this irresponsible fiscal mismanagement, they are calling for yet another round of tax increases.

Bills have been submitted in the state legislature that would raise taxes on gas another 10 cents per gallon.

In addition to a flat increase, our "leaders" want to add an indexed tax that automatically increases 1% every year.

This is exactly what Marylanders don't need - a tax that keeps on taking.

This funnel of money is going to hurt those who are exposed to problems in these tough economic times: the poor, the middle class, those on fixed incomes and small businesses.

In addition to the piercing at the pump, an increase in gas taxes is going to increase operational costs on all business, increasing the princes on everything from groceries to heating bills.

Maryland has a problem with too much spending, not too little taxation. Please take a few minutes to tell your state legislators that they need to reign in the spending just as average Marylanders have - not increase taxes on gas.

    1. Please sign our petition below to let your representatives know that you stand against this money grab.

    2. Please call your state delegates and your state senator and tell them to vote "NO" on increasing gas taxes. You can find their contact information here.

    3. Email this petition to your friends and family.

Thank you for all your efforts in fighting against this budgetary madness. If we act together we can end these political games with our tax dollars.

P.S. - If you would consider contributing $5 towards this fight, it would greatly help us in getting the word out on this issue. ALSO, we are holding a grassroots activist training this coming weekend. If you are interested in putting your ideas into action, please check out the event and pick up a ticket!

Gas Tax + Alcohol Tax = the democratic "poor tax" plan for Maryland.

    Alternative Action

Lets move to natural gas! T Boone Pickens is pushing is and it cost $1.00 a gallon. BG&E has removed all natural gas fill up stations in MD. I have a car that runs on natural gas. It works perfectly. No emissionsl problems, burns super clean and we have tons of the stuff right here in America. Also there is little to no tax tags thrown on it because its relativey an unknown. But the technologhy is old and very easily implmented. You see it advertised on busses all over town saying thats how their fueled. I don't understand WHY WE AS A pEOPLE DON'T RUN WITH THIS?
