Hundreds of environmentalists, union members and liberal activists converged on Rancho Mirage on Sunday to rally against what they see as the influence of two of the nation's leading financial backers of conservative causes.

The protestors waved signs condemning "corporate greed," chanted slogans and surged toward a line of helmeted police officers at the entrance to a resort where billionaires Charles and David Koch were holding a retreat for prominent conservative elected officials, major political donors and strategists.

Yeah, Cain is inside. Also, I hadn't realized the Kochs sponsored Students for Liberty as well as a fellowship program for their members -- just found that out when I was noting that Students for Liberty was having a reception for G. Johnson at CPAC. Since GJ doesn't seem to be a speaker on the CPAC schedule, I guess that is what his PAC is inviting people to when it is giving out discounted tickets to CPAC and inviting people to come meet him. In fact, I had wondered where the money had come for for that, since Gary isn't registering in the polls. Maybe the Kochs consider him an investment, or at least a distraction from Ron while they invest in Cain.

I had read a while back that there was friction between the Kochtopus side of libertarianism and the Paulist side, but even so, I was surprised when they donated to the great AIG backed freedom fighter Trey Greyson in his primary against Rand. I wonder how deep the division goes.

my guess is that they probably didnt hand choose TG over rand paul. They probably allocate a certain amount of money to be donated and then a fund manager makes the decisions as to who, and how much. I've always heard they were libertarians but who knows really

They give money to libertarian groups like CATO and hold themselves out as such, and given this was Rand Paul, and not some candidate no one was looking at, I find it hard to believe the Kochs just didn't notice what their fund manager was doing on that one.

David Koch is the one who ran for VP with Ed Clark for the Libertarian Party in 1980. His money helped the LP to advertise and get 1% of the vote.

The Marxists think that any super rich person who opposes socialism is evil. They never ask why many of the super rich support Marxism.

David earned the vice-presidential spot on the Libertarian ticket, then split with the group in 1984, when it promoted the idea of eliminating all taxes, and has been a Republican since.

I can sympathize with ending all taxes to a certain extent, but if there is going to be government, it will have to be funded somehow. I think the Libertarian party has driven away many reasonable people with its wildly idealistic ideas.

Ever notice how they always blame the evil rich capitalists for the movement to deny global warming, although the majority of research comes out of pocket from ordinary people and scientists, when compared to the trillions spent by governments, foundations, and universities.

It's the same thing with this. They simply will deny the obvious until you are blue in the face.

As far as the Koch brothers, I'm not really sure how powerful they are, but I do know they have alot of money. It seems kind of rare to have libertarian money of any sort funding alot of political causes, but I kind of question how libertarian they are until I know where they stand on foreign policy and other issues.

Reading the article, it seemed like they were not too fond of the tea party (one wonders why), and since Rand ran on a Tea Party platform, this is probably the reason why.
