I have believed this for a long time, even before I got interested in libertarian ideas.

It's incredible how hard the powers at government agencies will fight against even transparency in the name of safety and prosperity. The Federal Reserve, FDA, IRS, all love working behind closed doors and justify doing so "for our own good".
