    'Divest from Israel' Campaign Launched

“DIVEST FROM ISRAEL” California Ballot Initiative Launched:

Calif. ballot proposal for divestment gathering signatures
    September 8, 2010

LOS ANGELES (JTA) -- A proposed ballot initiative in California would force the state’s two public employee pension funds to withdraw investments from companies that “support Israeli settlement or supply military products to the government of Israel.”

The Israel Divestment Campaign, a recently formed organization, will hold a demonstration Wednesday in front of the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles, according to an e-mail announcement.

The proposed initiative was submitted earlier this year to the California attorney general by the Israel Divestiture Forum-IDF: Committed to End Israeli Occupation. …

To qualify as an initiative for next year’s ballot, supporters must collect the signatures of 434,000 registered California voters -- a complex and expensive undertaking -- by Jan. 31.

California's separate pension funds for public employees and for teachers provide a tempting target with their total investment portfolio of approximately $300 billion.

    THE ISRAEL DIVESTMENT CAMPAIGN (IDC)

The IDC is qualifying a ballot initiative in California, titled the Divestment of State Retirement Funds from Israel Act, to require California's public retirement systems, the State Teachers' Retirement System (STRS) and the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), to sell stocks held in companies that support Israeli settlements or provide military equipment and services to the State of Israel.

Israel's violation of Palestinian human rights and its settlements in and occupation of Palestine must end. Unfortunately, neither our federal government nor state governments are willing to take the necessary action to bring about peace to the region.

Therefore, we have decided to take the question of human rights violations, settlements and Israel's occupation directly to the voters of California. We believe an overwhelming majority of Californians agree that Israel needs to STOP building settlements on Palestinian land, end its occupation and allow Palestinians their right to return to their land.

Therefore, this ballot measure is necessary in order to move the Middle East Peace Process toward a just resolution for both Israelis and Palestinians.

In order to qualify the Divest from Israel Act for the next statewide ballot, 434,000 signatures must be gathered within a 5 month time period from September 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011. If you want to sign the petition or you want to help us gather signatures in your community once the petition is ready, please go to the Petition/Signature Info. menu tab to find out how you can participate.

Investing in Israel is neither secure nor does it provide an attractive return.

Hmmm that's a tough one.. On the one hand we have employees for the government essentially forced to invest in genocide... I guess it's not that tough of a decision.

If a private individual wants to invest in genocide in some far off land, I suppose the state shouldn't stop them
