Thread: Credit card merchant accounts, processing fees

Credit card merchant accounts, processing fees

In my experience, small business and online merchants typically are charged 3% or less when processing credit cards.

Do bigger businesses get a better rate? If so, how is it determined? By number of transactions? Or total dollar amount?

My question is, if a company has about $10M in transactions from about 100K customers (all domestic), is it possible they can pay a better rate than small businesses? Who should they talk to to negotiate this?

Some simple googling will answer your questions. And yes, the more transactions you run through will get you a lower rate. How the rate is determined varies between providers and account options.

I see lots of spam and ads when googling this kind of stuff, I was hoping somebody had some first hand experience or pointers.

Most of my customers use payflowpro
Setup fee: Between $179 and $249.
Monthly fee: Between $19.95 and 59.95
    Transaction fee: 10 cents
Indeed, the pricing is so similar to other payment gateways that the only real savings comes with the transaction fee, which is always a flat fee, without a percentage of the sale. However, unlike many payment gateways, PayFlow does offer a virtual terminal included in the price for orders taken by mail, fax or phone.

    10 cents flat? No percentages?

WOW. That's too good to be true!

BUT, looks like it's because you also need a merchant account on your own (is that where the 1-3% charges come in?)

Well that depends on the merchant account provider.
They also have a service that requires to merchant account

The merchant account is where you can work out a discount. But to find out how much, you are gonna probably have to talk on the phone with them.

Well it will tell you all the base rates.

And yes rates do change, but it is generally tailored for the customer and how much traffic they get. ie: no one size fits all option.

One reason you wont find much info on custom or discount rates is they don't want all their customers to know what is available

    I don't think your situation is atypical. Here's a chart: http://credit-card-processing-review.toptenreviews.com/

    I didn't think so either.

Looks like all over your chart, the lowest is still 1.6%, plus flat charges.

If you are interested, I have a friend who as far as I can tell develops custom processing rates based on the type of usage you have. I don't require credit card processing for my business, but if I did I would consider her. From what I can tell she's the lowest in town. She is self employed and has a good amount of leeway with her fees I believe.

I do know she can work nation wide, PM me if you want her info.
