Thread: Was Barry Goldwater really that great?

Was Barry Goldwater really that great?

Yes, he believed in states rights. He voted against the Civil Rights of 1964 which is very controversial. He also called for rollback which advocated fighting those countries where communism had taken root. I don't know about this guy, and I haven't been able to find much/haven't looked very hard.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

How about Barry Goldwater and the Johnson campaign. I mean, even though Johnson was promoting the war and spreading it, Barry Goldwater was turned into the guy who was going to unleash the bomb!

Goldwater was great. If he had become president the world would look very different today.

Of course, he was great. How many political icons would write such controversial statements as these in their memoirs?:

"The Council on Foreign Relations has placed its members in policy-making with the State Department and other federal agencies. Every secretary of State since 1944, with the exception of James F Byrnes, has been a member of the council. Almost without exception, its members are united by a congeniality of birth, economic status and educational background. I believe that the Council on Foreign relations and its ancillary elitist groups are indifferent to communism. They have no ideological anchors. In their pursuit of a New World Order, they are prepared to deal without prejudice with a communist state, a socialist state, a democratic state, a monarchy, an oligarchy - it's all the same to them."

I remember my Dad saying he wished Barry would win that election.

Barry Goldwater was the only presidential candidate for whom Ayn Rand ever campaigned. That has to tell you something about him, and remember that Rand was about as unforgiving and hard nosed as anyone has ever been (read: kind of a bitch, but I still love her).

The media was so opposed to him in the 1964 election that he HAD to be a threat. Did that make him great? Perhaps not but it at least made him VERY GOOD!

As I recall, Ayn Rand also supported fighting communist nations.

the early 1960s had their FAIL/SAFE moments and at times their own unique & curious nuclear lore...
