First and foremost I don't have video of the event, I can get video of the event, but the 9/12 KY group should have an official release today or tomorrow. The format was obviously odd and it was really just a Q/A session in which both candidates answered the same question while not in the room at the same time.
It doesn't matter though since all you need to know is that Grayson would have been better not to show up. After Rand spoke, 5-6 Grayson supporters showed up to try to bump up the applause... the problem was they didn't know what applause was. The only applause Grayson got was his same line about ACORN, even his closing speech only got maybe 4-5 voters.
Today it was Rand Paul v. The Crickets whom where chirping the entire time Grayson was speaking. Grayson had all the elegance of a 4 year old when answering his questions.
The nail in the coffin was the question, "Along what line would you vote; what your constituents want, what you want, what is the most equal or what the founding fathers would want?"
Rand answered this question with his common litmus test of:
1.Is it moral
2.Is it legal
3.Does the constitution allow it
He closed with saying that he is straightforward on his positions and that his constituents have their say in his election, there are certainly times like the Bunning Pay-Go situation in which the right thing is not the most popular but must still be done and he will stand beside what is right not his or others desires.
Grayson started to squirm and fumble. He started off by saying maybe the founding fathers first, but really he wanted something else. Then he said well it's really a tie because my constituents and I want the same thing, and then he kind of backed off that realizing that may not be the case. So he ended with a hierarchy starting with himself at the top, so in the end it was:
Grayson's wants > constituent's wants > founding fathers desires > etc.
However Grayson said that his wants and the constituent's wants are really really close to a tie, but he comes first.
The rest is downhill. A few Rand supporters said that if the debate were broadcast across the state that it would be detrimental to Grayson and the race would be over. Ironically the 9/12 group is in contact with CSPAN who wants footage of this highly covered race and has agreed to air it if possible. So you can see for yourself how dismal it was for Grayson.
Leland Conway moderated, and he is probably leaning somewhat close to Rand, but he has long term ties to Grayson and they are good friends. It should be noted that his comments about Santorum attacking Rand almost lead to the cancellation of the debate as Grayson felt threatened and it had to be smoothed over. Grayson is learning not to attack Rand, although still makes pot shots over abortion despite their ineffectiveness.
Other talking points:
Rand explained and rallied against the Federal Reserve much to the enjoyment of the crowd.
Rand explained his opposition to the Patriot Act and tied it to the similar circumstances leading to the American Revolution, again to the enjoyment of the crowd.
David might explain this better, but apparently somebody issued an Ultimatum for himself today and walked in the debate with a Rand and Grayson sticker on, when it was all said and done he walked out, took the Grayson sticker off and threw it away.
Rand had no signs left at the end of the debate, despite having multiple events this evening... his message is resonating.
