FLORENCE - U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul officially launched his Northern Kentucky campaign Saturday in the backyard of his main Republican rival, Secretary of State Trey Grayson of Boone County.
Paul opened his Northern Kentucky campaign office on Mall Road in Florence Saturday morning, and he spent the afternoon campaigning door-to-door with supporters in Union.
"Some of my oldest friends are from Northern Kentucky. I've known some of these people for 10 years or more. I think there's also a very committed conservative wing of the party up here," he said. "I think Northern Kentucky's one of our best organizations. We really truly think that my opponent has no advantage up here."
Campaign officials said the Florence office will serve as headquarters for an organization that includes about 1,000 volunteers in Northern Kentucky, who will be campaigning door-to-door for Paul every weekend between now and the May 18 primary.
Between 150 and 200 people attended the grand opening to hear Paul speak and pick up yard signs and bumper stickers.
"I think this is truly the year of the outsider, and I think we can do it," he told the cheering crowd.
His platform includes pledges to work for limited government and a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget.
That appeals to voters like Bob Rogers of Edgewood, who said federal spending "is completely out of control."
He supports Paul "because he's more conservative than anybody else I see on the horizon," he said. "And it's way past time we clean out what's up there (in Washington)."
Paul and Grayson are running in the GOP primary for the seat of U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Southgate, who will retire at the end of the year.
Grayson's campaign headquarters is also in Florence; it opened in August on Ky. 18 near Turfway Road.
