Investments. Government (on nearly all levels) has been increasing its position in various markets for a long time.

If this is true, then does that mean the U.S. is not as broke as everyone thinks? Are the huge deficits just a fake excuse to raise taxes?

Well, the government does own a lot of land? I am sure we could sell that off to pay off a decent chunk of the deficit.

It is well known that most of our national debt in the form of treasury notes are held by various government agencies- with the biggest being the Social Security administration but also other departments as well. Others are in retirement funds for government employees. As of September 2009, the Federal Reserve and other goverment agencies had $5.1 trillion worth or about 40% of our debt. http://www.cnbc.com/id/29880401?slide=16

The optimists built this country and made it great- not the fearful. Fear can only destroy.
