9,000 More Marines Prepare to Head To Afghanistan
The Washington Post reports as many as 9,000 Marines are beginning final preparations to deploy to Afghanistan. The extra Marines will be sent to Afghanistan soon after President Obama outlines his new war strategy on Tuesday during a speech at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Obama is expected to call for 30,000 to 35,000 new troops in a phased deployment over the next 12 to 18 months. Meanwhile U.S. officials are pressing NATO for an additional 10,000 troops to augment the U.S. troop surge.

Afghan Civilian: U.S. Escalation Will Be a “Bad Disaster”
Protests are being planned for tonight outside West Point, the site of President Obama’s speech. On Monday representatives of 34 antiwar groups delivered an open letter to President Obama strongly opposing his decision to escalate the war. Meanwhile in Afghanistan many residents have expressed opposition to Obama’s war plans.
Obidullah Khan, resident of Kandahar: “If they (Americans) increase troops numbers they will bombard the houses of innocent people more, they will kill more innocent Muslims, they will search more houses and this is going to be a bad disaster for the country.”
