I had posted this in another thread, and as we are into the heating season I felt it might do someone some good to copy paste it here.
For those that have chimneys I will let you in on a little secret for extinguishing a chimney fire.
They use to make these nifty sticks that were much like a flare, strike the end cap, throw it in the fireplace or stove and out goes the fire.
However, the EPA, in all it's wisdom, decided these devises emitted too many toxins. Like a house burning down wouldn't emit more?
So here is a nifty trick.
Initiate your fire safety/evacuation plan.
Using an extinguisher suppress the fire in the fireplace or stove.
Always have a ladder for quick roof access.
Of course you should have plenty of extinguishers on hand. You do don't you?
Next get some plastic sandwich baggies and store them next to the extinguisher you would use if you had a chimney fire (closest to the door).
Now if you have a chimney fire you would access the roof. Spray the retardant from the extinguisher into the plastic sandwich bag and drop it down the roaring chimney.
As the bag drops the plastic is melted away and the retardant is dispersed. Just keep dropping in the bags until you have extinguished the fire to the base of the chimney.
If you are a brave soul let the fire rage for a few minutes. Nothing, not even a chimney sweep, can clean a chimney of creosote like a chimney fire.
However you should probably go with the chimney sweep option.
