AIDS vaccine "important step" against disease

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An experimental AIDS vaccine made from two older versions has made major progress in finding an effective way to combat the illness, researchers said on Thursday.

But its application may be limited and a commercial vaccine may require more time.

The health minister of Thailand, where the trials were conducted, called the outcome a "very important step for developing an AIDS vaccine." Two U.N. agencies said they gave "new hope" in battling the disease but more work was needed.

At least one researcher suggested the vaccine might not be effective in areas and in instances where AIDS is most prevalent.

The vaccine is a combination of Sanofi-Pasteur's ALVAC canary pox vaccine and the failed HIV vaccine AIDSVAX, made by a San Francisco company called VaxGen and now owned by the nonprofit Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases.

The trial was sponsored by the U.S. army and conducted by the Thai Ministry of Public Health. Officials from the two countries told a news conference in Bangkok the risk of infection had been cut by 31.2 percent among 16,402 volunteers.

It will be interesting to see where they're going with this. It's hard to tell from this article, but I have *hopes* this may be an indication that they will back down, way down, from their current "it's going to be mandatory for everyone" insanity.

1cc of saline solution is an effective HIV/AIDS vaccine. That's because HIV doesn't cause AIDS.. Your body has a natural immune response against HIV. Drug use, AIDS medications and lack of nutrition causes AIDS. There is also a disease common among homosexuals that causes AIDS, but it is highly treatable. If a patient comes in with this disease and tests negative for HIV, they are easily cured with pharmaceuticals. If they test positive for HIV, then they are incorrectly labeled as having HIV/AIDS.

Look up Dr. Peter Duesberg of UC Berkeley. He's a real live expert in retro-viruses.

HIV Vaccine Success May Take Decade to Unravel Why It Works

HIV Vaccine Success May Take Decade to Unravel Why It Works

Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The surprise finding that a combination of two experimental vaccines reduced HIV infections is confounding long-held assumptions about the AIDS virus and sending scientists back to the laboratory to address mysteries that may take a decade to solve.

A study of 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, reported last week, found those getting the immunization had a 31 percent lower infection rate than those given a placebo, the first time any vaccine had positive results. The report startled scientists, many of whom had dismissed the trial as a dead end, said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease in Bethesda, Maryland.

The injection must be at least 50 percent effective before widespread immunization is feasible, said Josh Ruxin, director of the Access Project program in Rwanda. Researchers led by Fauci say they can’t improve the vaccine until they understand how it blocked infections, or why it failed to show any benefit for people who still got infected with HIV.

“Some of our preconceived notions about what to measure and what we think is important might have just been turned on its head,” said Colonel Nelson L. Michael, director of the division of retrovirology at the Walter Reed military hospital in Washington, in a news conference. The U.S. military helped conduct the trial.

HIV infects about 7,400 new people every day worldwide, and led to 2 million deaths in 2007 according to UNAIDS. While there are treatments that can suppress the virus for those who can afford them, there is no cure. Even after the success of the vaccine study, a much-needed vaccine may yet be 10 years away, according to the Access Project’s Ruxin and Jeffrey Kraws, chief executive officer of Crystal Research Associates in New York.

The Thai study combined two vaccines, neither proven. One was ALVAC,

AIDS Vaccine Is of Modest Help, Fuller Research Says

    By GAUTAM NAIK

NEW YORK – A deeper analysis of the results of an HIV vaccine tested in Thailand suggests that the vaccine may not have been as effective as originally indicated.

When first publicly disclosing the outcome of the Thai trial in September, researchers said the vaccine had lowered the risk of infection by about 31%. That result was modest but statistically significant, meaning it wasn't the result of a fluke. That announcement, coming after two decades of failed HIV vaccine trials, garnered headlines around the world.

Now, two other analyses of the trial data suggests that the results could have been due to pure chance, and therefore the vaccine may not have conferred protection to people after all. The additional data are published today in the New England Journal of Medicine and will be more fully discussed today by researchers attending an AIDS meeting in Paris.
