    Internet Privacy

Just a reminder. The internet is no longer anonymous. Every site you go to records who you are. A unique number called an IP address identifies exactly who you are. The IP address can be used to look up your name, address and account information at your internet service provider. I would recommend the Tor software (free) with Prioxy (comes with Tor). The Firefox web browser is easiest to use with Tor. Be sure Tor is enabled in Firefox once installed. READ THE TOR DOCUMENTATION! You can set Tor to be always enabled with is safer.

    Tor:

    http://www.torproject.org/
BE SURE TO READ THE DOC BEFORE YOU ASSUME IT IS WORKING.

    Firefox:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html
You must enable Tor in firefox.

And as always. Even with some attempt at privacy don't ever say anything that you wouldn't say in public. Don't expect privacy.

IPs have existed since the internet began and you could always get info off of them you just needed a warrant and using Tor doesn't require that you be in Firefox all you need to do is tell your browser to use a SOCKS proxy located at 127.0.0.1 and whatever port you selected for Privoxy.

Up until 9 11 IP addresses were rotated within your IPS's range each time you connected. Now they are fixed so you can be tracked over time.

Would it be better to switch to a Linux distro if you want more privacy too? I was thinking about switching to Ubuntu and someone was telling me it was harder for people to send Spyware and hack you.

Does TOR work on Opera too?

    Thats not true...

Dial up users are normally assigned an IP when they log on.

Residential High Speed Broadband Users (DSL, Cable, etc) are usually given an IP address when the modem logs onto the system however the IP doesn't change as often because people leave their routers on 24/7.

For that matter, if someone has the IP and the Time and Date of the issue, they can track that back to the user who was logged into the system at that time with that IP address. Having a Fixed IP isn't really needed.
