Damage Control: GOP Bosses Coming Down Hard On Birthers

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2...e-birthers.php
Even Coulter and OReilley say birthers are cranks. Bill OReilly?
It's now looking like a lot of prominent Republicans, ranging from party leaders to big-name pundits that we usually expect to make outrageous partisan attacks, are doing something they'd been previously neglecting: Definitively cracking down on the Birthers, rather than playing to the conspiracy theorists allowing this stuff to continue festering among their activist base.

Until recently, this wasn't the situation at all. Indeed, prominent Congressional Republicans were openly entertaining this stuff. A bill to require birth certificates from presidential candidates has picked up 11 total co-sponsors; Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) declared that the Birthers "have a point," and that he doesn't discourage it. Even House GOP Vice-Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), a member of the leadership, was saying she wanted to see the documents.

But now there's a pattern from on high -- in both the punditocracy and from the party leadership -- of Republicans backing away from this:

    • Of course, all House Republicans who were present voted Monday night in favor of the resolution to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hawaii's statehood, which included language recognizing the state has Obama's birthplace. This included Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL), the lead sponsor of a bill to require presidential candidates to present birth certificates, and House GOP Vice-Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). Only 20 GOPers missed the vote, which can happen for any number of reasons on a non-binding resolution.

    • Last night on his TV show, Bill O'Reilly comprehensively debunked the Birthers:

O'Reilly said to a letter-writer who declared himself not convinced that Obama is an American: "That is because you don't want to be convinced, Larry." That's as good a summary of the Birthers' motivations as any other.

    • Even Ann Coulter, who normally can't resist the opportunity to attack Democrats as evil and un-American, calls the Birthers "cranks."

    • After Birther leader Orly Taitz made the peculiar claim that the GOP leadership was on board, claiming as evidence that multiple high-ranking GOPers had accepted her Facebook requests, they all prominently said no way.

    • Greg Sargent asked RNC chairman Michael Steele's office about his views of Birtherism -- and they unambiguously shot it down:

"Chairman Steele believes that this is an unnecessary distraction and believes that the president is a U.S. citizen. Chairman Steele wants to move beyond this conversation and continue discussing the real and immediate concerns that face American families like the economy and health care. Americans are concerned with President Obama's health care plan, a failed stimulus package and a ballooning deficit. Chairman Steele has many other issues to take up with the president that have to do with policy, not a birth certificate."

Look at the people coming out against it, are they friends of freedom?

What do Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly have to do with the Republican party?

The GOP is not coming down hard on birthers.....in fact all the hysteria is in the anti-birther crowd. Really honestly you guys need to hill out. Even giving a label to anyone who dares look into the background of a sitting president.

I get it you don't care about the natural born constitution requirement. However the law is the law and others might prefer our leaders be held to the constitution. The anti-birther movement is the real freak show. I for one find it interesting to see where this all goes, it's funny really. I mean what could be more interesting than finding out if a president lied a frauded his way into the whitehouse?

To me it's very interesting, and I will continue to read about it. As for the anti-birthers who are flippin out, you are the ones distracting everyone from other issues. I think the anti-birthers have created more hysteria than any of the birthers. Anyways I have family and friends who are all interested in this, they are gonna decide for themselves what is and what is not important.

The fact is, if Obama is found to have lied, and the coverup involves the GOP....it's gonna be a bad day for them. The best thing to do is just forget about it and let it ride out. A lot of crazy stuff coming out about this. In the end it will be the actions to cover all this up that will get folks in trouble.

These two are not the GOP. The GOP tries to be so moderate that it wants nothing to do with Coulter. And O'Reilly is just a boob.

GOP is a joke and always has been. They said nothing during Bush and only now are they coming out against spending and all that $#@!.

Coulter and O'Reilly may be a lot of things but dumb isn't one of them. They don't want to end up with egg on their face.

The harder they come down on the birthers, the more foolish they will look when the truth comes out.

I want to know why it's always the GOP that is getting the flack on this forum? The democraps are SOCIALISTS..and some of the GOP also...but the GOP grassroots are MORE closely connected to libertarianism by far than the democrap party...you people are pegging the WRONG FOLKS as the enemy. Granted..a politician is a politician..and the GOP bigwigs are not much different than the democrats...but the grassroots republicans are VERY different. If you were NICE to them...maybe we can get more of them coming our way. Glenn Beck is doing a good job. He is a libertarian and not a republican, bill oreilly calls himself an independent although I believe he gets shivers up his legs when Obama speaks. tones

Move this to hot topics please, seeing as for some reason the Kenyan BC thread gets tossed in Hot topics, this can go there too. This "moderation" is starting to look might shifty.

I thought you were leaving if another anti birther thread appeared on this forum. You'll see plenty.

What, are they paying you by the thread instead of by the hour now?

Exactly the truth has a sombering effect. And all the hysteria will be seen for what it probably is, a means to intimidate and cover up something quite illegal. Anyways I am following this stuff, and anyone who does not like it can, of course, go straight to hell.

Thumbs down blogger ignorantly accuses Rand of bring a birther

    http://barefootandprogressive.blogsp...fineprint.html

At Fancy Farm, I asked Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul if President Obama was born in the United States and he said he "didn't know". Yes, Rand Paul is a birther.

I never said I did, and neither did Rand. The point is that the blogger posted a non sequitur as fact which is incorrect.

You mean does he want more proof than the law requires? Or you mean will he settle for only as much proof as the law requires, which is what we already have, like it or not, so that the discussion already has ended?

Well at least he is honest and not here like a raving madman posting anti-birther threads. He probably is waiting to see what happens like a lot of folks.

Little league would expect more in many towns than the one the President provided...Especially if there was a question as to the veracity of said format.

    Go Forward With Courage

    When you are in doubt, be still, and wait;
when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage.
    So long as mists envelop you, be still;
be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists
    -- as it surely will.

That is such a funny statement! The supposed proof that has been provided is not enough to get a passport with but according to you it is enough to be the president of the U.S. The certificate of live birth that was provided is not a complete and accurate record of where he was born. It simply shows that his birth was registered in Hawaii not that he was born there. When and only when he provides a certifiable long form birth certificate will the question of his eligibility be laid to rest. To say that it is not important as he was elected is just another way of saying the constitution is not relevant to life in the U.S.

Laid to rest for whom? You? Maybe (though I'm confident there will still be some birthers who will deny it). But as far as the law is concerned, it's already laid to rest. This isn't a matter of opinion where 300 million separate individuals all get to decide how much proof is necessary for them each subjectively before Obama can meet the constitutional requirement of being a natural born citizen. The official state records of Hawaii say he was born there. So as far as the law is concerned he was. Even if no long form birth certificate exists anywhere at all, that legal fact is still the case and no amount of gesticulating over it will change it.

You really think so? Can you really imagine a scenario where proof is provided that Obama was born in Kenya and he steps down? I can't.
