The Dutch justice ministry has announced it will close eight prisons and cut 1,200 jobs in the prison system. A decline in crime has left many cells empty.

During the 1990s the Netherlands faced a shortage of prison cells, but a decline in crime has since led to overcapacity in the prison system. The country now has capacity for 14,000 prisoners but only 12,000 detainees.
Deputy justice minister Nebahat Albayrak announced on Tuesday that eight prisons will be closed, resulting in the loss of 1,200 jobs. Natural redundancy and other measures should prevent any forced lay-offs, the minister said.
The overcapacity is a result of the declining crime rate, which the ministry's research department expects to continue for some time.
    Belgian prisoners
Some reprieve might come from a deal with Belgium, which is facing overpopulation in its prisons. The two countries are working out an agreement to house Belgian prisoners in Dutch prisons. Some five-hundred Belgian prisoners could be transferred to the Tilburg prison by 2010.
The Netherlands would get 30 million euros in the deal, and it will allow the closing of the prisons in Rotterdam and Veenhuizen to be postponed until 2012.

Obviously, they need to invent more crimes! For the economy!

Why! The Netherlands' lack of need for prisons could solve a problem for the USA. El Presidente could still keep his promise to close Gitmo by simply sending prisoners and staff to the Netherlands. How convenient. Whee.

What was conspicuously omitted was why the crime rate is down, which I assume is due to drug decriminalization.

    Think your right here.

btw: and interesting factoid - In Holland it is NOT a crime to attempt to (or succeed) in escaping from jail / prison, as the dutch consider confinement an unnatural condition. It is, however a crime to injure anyone in such an attempt. And just for the record, Dutch jails have the nicest living conditions of anywhere in the world.

    as a matter of fact

Holland has less crime than the safest state in america, New Hamshire
    (2 Apr 2009). The murder rate is less then 1. / 100.000 .
Amsterdam would be the safest city in US.
UNICEF: Holland is the safest place for children in the world.
And compare the education PISA report 2007/2008.

Teenage birth and abortion rates are the lowest in the Netherlands
even abortion is alloweld like soft-drugs doesn't mean that people
using softdrugs. As a matter of fact they have the lowest
abortion rate in the world as the rate for softdrugs use.
Softdrugs are not populair by kidsand adults in Holland. (can it be
with the highest labour effectively (OESO) or the best Health Care ? *
(EHCI report, Sweden 2008) or the best road safety in the world ?
It has also the most reliable water and energy supply, most people
have never got a powercut in that country.

Corruption is almost not known in Holland compared with. Thats why t
he figures are so reliable (even controlled by EUstat and all Nordic
countries are using the same Hochrechnung-system).

For most Americans its hard to understand Holland: So much freedom
and still all the figures of crime and corruption are extremely low ?
Its hard because most people in Holland don't believe in a God
anymore still they are very social and have the highest standards
like: paying the most aid to the developing countries foreign aid,
paying the most in the European Union, for Freedom missions,
etc. and was/is a good friend of the United States (one of the last
    countries in Europe *(Bush (Irak/Afghanistan).

Holland was always independent in Europe, what ever its neighbours
or the European Union said, it will always be a supporter and friend
of the United States even their neigbours said: "dont follow the US"

    * OESO 2006 )

So much tax payers money spent to build prison and then there are not even enough criminals to populate the prison? There must be an investigation how did this happen.

Why do you say most of them don't believe in God? I know that might be true for some European countries. But I don't think Holland is one of them. Do you have a source?
