Obama declares June 'LGBT Pride Month'

In a presidential proclamation on the White House website, Barack Obama has lauded what he calls "the determination and dedication" of the LGBT movement by proclaiming June as "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month."

"The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress," Obama states in the official proclamation, "but there is more to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect."

The proclamation, released on Monday, credits the LGBT movement with being a factor in more Americans who ascribe to those groups "living their lives openly today than ever before."

There is nothing wrong with gay pride. Gay people are given a really hard time growing up by their peers, they are definitely put at a disadvantage in life. I'm a male who is sexually repelled by other males, and extremely attracted to females. It is because of this, ironically, that I have realized that being gay is not an option. I can't imagine what it must be like to be put in the opposite situation.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating success when one is a minority who is treated badly by the majority (and yes, the majority of people, even in California, treat gay people poorly.. it is only in spirit that they celebrate diversity, etc..)

I am, however, against government advocating pride celebrations for individual groups. That isn't what government is for.

On top of that, these gay pride rallies seem to be pretty upsetting for some straight people, especially Christians. Maybe if government didn't mandate this stuff, then straight people would feel more comfortable about gay people, and then gay people wouldn't have the need to feel like they have to have their lifestyle accepted because it already would be more acceptable.

if he had been a supporter of LGBT rights beforehand then I might buy this, but he has not supported those issues until he realized that he was going to lose a voting block that he had made one of his famous campaign promises too. Since he's breaking all the others and losing support, he's trying to keep some supporters with this tactic.

I'm sick of the issue being made, I'm sick of being a talking point by either side of the political spectrum. Leave me alone! I don't want to walk in front of you with a thong, I don't give a rat's ass about tax breaks or social security benefits. What I want is to know that if my partner/spouse/whatever is in the hospital, that I don't have to wait till business hours the next day for my lawyer to sue the hospital to allow me bed-side access when I've got a medical power of attorney.
What I want is to know that if I die, my partner/spouse/whatever will get everything I have without having to fight my possibly hostile family that disowned me 30 years ago.

Those are the rights I want. But Obama, if you aren't going to support that, then don't pretend to be my friend by saying that suddenly, June is my "special" month.

I'm devastated by this recognition.

I expect that, pretty soon, I will go to Walmart and adjacent to my monthly supply of Ramen will be a poster of a male-male couple. I'll laugh... I'll cry... but ultimately, the tears will overtake the laughter and I'll have to ask for forgiveness as soon as Sunday rolls around, for I'm sure I'll be tempted to kill a homosexual for ruining my life and the lives of all others exposed to homosexuality.
