Tea Parties in Montpelier and Rutland

There will be two tea parties in Vermont on April 15. The first is in Montpelier on the State House lawn (permits pending) from noon - 2pm. The Rutland Tea Party will be at Main St Park (permits pending) from 4pm -8pm.

I am organizing the Montpelier Tea Party. Inquiries about this event can be sent to capitolteaparty at gmail dot com.

Right now we have one confirmed speaker, John McClaughry, formerly Senior Policy Advisor to Ronald Reagan and member of the Vermont Senate and current President of the Ethan Allen Institute.

I'm working on scheduling 2 additional speakers.

Rather than mailing tea bags to the President and our Congressional delegation, I ask all of you to bring at least 3 tea bags with you to the rally. We will have 3 crates set up near the Federal building (a short walk from the State House) in which you should deposit your tea bags. The crates will then be delivered to the offices of Rep. Welch and Sens. Leahy and Sanders. I am asking for volunteers who would be willing to make these deliveries (especially to Welch as his office is in Burlington).

Suggestions and comments are always welcome!

I emailed you about the tea bags not making it to the politicians. Because of the fear of anthrax or some other substanace these tea bags are being thrown out and not arriving at their destination. This was on one of the news shows, Neil Cavuto or Glenn Beck, I forget which. Won't that be the same fate of these crates of tea bags? I was going to personally mail tea bags until I heard that. I want them to visually see and get the point! I don't want some security person throwing them all out before that happens.

I just sent you back an email but I will reiterate what I said here for others.

If our elected officials refuse or discard the crates that's their prerogative. But they will be delivered and someone at the office will know about it. Welch, Leahy and Sanders will get the point. It is a very symbolic action both for the people and the recipients.

Perhaps we should include a card or letter with the crates?

    Hi folks!

It's been a busy week but we have made much progress! As of today we are officially all set with permits for the State House Lawn April 15 noon-2pm. We have insurance thanks to FreedomWorks and we even have a rain date! If it rains the Tea Party will be at the same location from noon until 2 on Saturday April 18. If it rains I can't guarantee that we will have all 4 (yes 4!) speakers but we can still gather, wave signs and flags, gather tea bags and all the other good stuff that we're working on!

As I mentioned above we now have 4 speakers. In addition to John McClaughry (former senior policy adviser to Ronald Reagan and VT State Senator and current president of the Ethan Allen Institute), I am pleased to announce the addition of Matt Cropp and a member of Vermonters for Economic Health (speaker's name to be announced soon). Matthew Cropp is a VT Campaign for Liberty precinct leader, co-host of American Socialism for the Rich and organizer of the Bank Users' Strike Team. Vermonters for Economic Health is a non-partisan group of citizens concerned with Vermont's deteriorating economic health.

Requests have been pouring in from various places for more information about the Tea Party. This is so exciting! One inquiry came from TJ Michaels of WSNO radio who will be helping to advertise the event. In addition he will be broadcasting live from the Tea Party! Advertising is going to be a major factor in how successful this event will be. I have a list of media contacts and I would very much appreciate it I could get a few volunteers who would be willing to contact these media outlets to be sure that the Montpelier Tax Day Tea Party gets as much coverage as possible. I am scheduled to be on Jim Hogue's radio show Monday April 13 at 8:30 am (91.1 WGDR Plainfield and streaming online). I am hoping to get at least a few minutes of air time on True North Radio, as well. Please contact me if you can help contact media outlets.

In my last email I mentioned that we needed a PA system. TJ Michaels has generously offered us the use of his equipment so we are all set on that end. We have one person who has offered to take video of the Tea Party. It would be great if a couple more people would commit to this so that we can compile footage from different perspectives. Again, please contact me if you can help film the event.

It was suggested to me by a few people that we contact the Governor, former candidates and current legislators to give them an opportunity to address the crowd. After careful consideration I feel that they have many opportunities to communicate what they think to the people. We the people have been ignored for far too long. It is OUR turn to be seen and heard. As I mentioned before I hope that people will take advantage of the proximity to pay a visit to their legislators. I plan to have copies of a committee schedule so that we know what will be discussed in various committees on the 15th. Citizens can and should attend open committee meetings and hearings.

My counterpart in Rutland, Jon Wallace, had a great idea for that Tea Party and one which I think would be great for Montpelier. In addition to bringing at least 3 teabags, we ask that you bring a non-perishable food item to donate to a local food pantry. Fiscally conservative people are often accused of being cold and greedy. Let's show the accusers how wrong they are! Vermonters can help each other out. We don't have to rely on the government in times of hardship. We say it so let's prove it! If you or someone you know operates a food shelf in the greater Montpelier area and would like to help me with the food drive please contact me.

A fellow patriot mentioned that it would be great if we could help people connect to carpool. I think this is a fantastic idea. If you will be attending the tea party and have room in your car please send an email to teapartycarpool at gmail dot com with the number of seats and location and we'll see if we can help you out. Please be aware that if you choose to take passengers or get a ride with a stranger we are in no way liable for any problems. We are simply offering a service to connect people. What you choose to do is your own responsibility so please think it through before you offer or take a ride.

I suggest having sign parties with people in your area. It's a great way to meet folks in your area, have fun, be creative and get pumped up for the Tea Party!

This email is becoming very long. I hope I've answered your questions but if I haven't please reply and I will get back to you as quickly as I can. Please visit www.taxdayteaparty.com/vermont/ and www.vermontteaparty.com . We have a facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=136459375537 If you are a facebook user please rsvp and invite your friends!

Just a reminder that though there are a number of organizations involved with or advertising the Montpelier and Rutland Tax Day Tea Parties they are totally non-partisan, family-friendly events.

Also, if you wish to be removed from the list let me know and I won't send you any more emails about the Tea Party. Otherwise, please spread this far and wide!

    April 1 update

    Hi folks!

The buzz is getting louder! Thanks to everyone who has been passing along these emails and helping to spread the word! As many of you may know the VSEA held a rally to protest job cuts. The Times Argus is reporting that there were 300 people in attendance. Let's dwarf this protest with our own message of reducing spending and taxes. We're Taxed Enough Already!

A number of people have requested information on a whole lot of things so I'm going to try to break it down.

    Spreading the message:
Doug from Xtreme Grafix has put together a great flier to advertise the Montpelier Tea Party. I'm going to attach it to this email. Please download and print a few copies to hang on bulletin boards in your area. We need to get this message out LOUD and CLEAR!

As I mentioned in my last update WSNO radio is sponsoring the Montpelier Tea party. TJ Michaels made a fantastic commercial that will be airing at least 8 times a DAY! In addition I will be on Paul Beaudry's Comment Show tomorrow morning (4/2) during the 8:00 hour and on True North on Friday (4/3). On 4/11 I will be on TJ Michaels' show am 1450 and then on 4/13 I will be on Jim Hogue's show on 91.1 WGDR time tba.

So, this is all great but we need more! I've been reading through some ideas on how to get the media involved in this. Please take a few minutes and call the local tv stations and newspapers. Don't tell them about the Tea Party-- ASK them about it. Tell them you heard about it and need more information. This creates demand. If enough people do this they will seek information. With the help of the VT Campaign For Liberty, a series of press releases are going out to media all over the state. Between consumer demand and press releases we should get some attention. Also, please write letters to the editor, comment on online newspaper articles, call in to radio shows and help spread the word!

    Parking:
Parking in Montpelier can be a challenge! Most of the parking lots are permitted and many of the meters have a 2 hour limit. Here is a link to parking info from the City of Montpelier. There is a map and listed below are the names and locations of lots. There is also a parking garage located at the City Center on the corner of Main and East State Sts behind La Brioche. I really encourage everyone to try to carpool and arrive early. Again, to help coordinate carpoolers we have set up this email: teapartycarpool at gmail.com . If you have room or need a ride send an email. This is a courtesy and we can't be held liable if problems arise from your choice to carry passengers or ride in someone else's car.

Wishlist: If you can help with any of these things please send me an email so I can keep track of what we have covered and what we still need.

People to video the event and send copies to me afterward.

Sign wavers to stand at key corners in Montpelier prior to the tea party. I have 2 people so far, we need at least 4 more people to do this.

3 wooden crates or cardboard boxes altered to look like crates to collect tea bags.

A fife and drum corps or similar musical entertainment. Or even just one fife and one drum!

Flags-- American, Green Mountain Boys, Gadsden, etc and people to carry them.

Lyric lists for appropriate protest songs that we can sing as a group. (I'm having a hard time finding these. The best and most well known songs of protests are unfortunately from the Left and not suitable for our event!)

Volunteers for clean up after the rally. The same 2 folks who have offered to wave signs on corners have also volunteered to help with clean up. Many hands make light work. We'd appreciate all the help we can get-- though I don't anticipate a big mess, you never know. We will also need some bags or cans for trash and recyclables.

Volunteers to deliver the tea crates to Leahy, Welch and Sanders' offices.

Tables. I have a giant scroll that I plan to write a Petition for Redress of Grievances on. We need to spread it out so people can sign it.

Boxes in which to put the food we collect.

Anything else you can think of. Be creative!

    Miscellaneous:

Be sure to pack a lunch and bring a blanket or chairs to sit on. There is no vending on the State House Lawn, though the cafeteria will be open. Again, this is a peaceful, family-friendly event. No pets allowed unless they are service animals.

Vermonters For Economic Health will be making a presentation "vermont's Unsustainable Future" immediately following the Tea Party at 2pm in the AIV conference room. This presentation is free and open to the public. Having seen this presentation before I highly recommend making time to attend. For more information please visit http://www.vermontersforeconomichealth.org/

The "We The People" Food drive at the Tea Party will benefit the Salavation Army Emergency Food Shelf. TJ Michael's will be helping me coordinate this effort. Please make sure to bring a non-perishable food item.

Again, we have a website www.vermontteaparty.com , comments can be made at this site: www.taxdayteaparty.com/vermont and a facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/e...d=136459375537 If you use facebook please RSVP.

And don't forget-- the Legislature is in session! Be sure to allow time for yourself to stop in and sayhello. Let your Representatives and Senators know where you stand!

CARPOOLING - I wanted to mention that there is one person in the Woodstock area who could take a couple of riders. This person wants to attend both tea parties though. There is someone in Fairfax who is able to take 2 more riders. If anyone in those 2 areas would like to get hooked up send an email to teapartycarpool@gmail.com and let me know. I will update here as I get more info. Thanks.

Thanks! I'll post this to the facebook event page, too.

I'm not going to promote any of the national efforts. Folks can find the information if they want it, just how they found the Montpelier Tea Party. You can post it on the page if you want, though.

Here's a great video of the Montpelier Tea Party.
