I'm seeing a lot of this crap lately. Even Hannity referred to himself as a libertarian. They're confusing the masses so that most people won't understand what a libertarian really is.

sheeple: "well, dang - if Ramsey, Beck and Hannity are libertarians, maybe I should vote for the LP candidate - I like what those guys say"...

We watched Dave Ramsey 's videos in my accounting class. I like his ideals, what does he say wrong? I never heard him talk about non-financial things.

Very true. But it legitimizes us and opens the door for discussion and further education.

When people call themselves a libertarian challenge them on it and see if they can explain what it means. Then point them in the direction of further education, CFL, Mises, Cato, Reason, etc...

    I like a lot of Ramsey's advice, but if he's a libertarian, he's a Mike Huckabee libertarian.

Evidently, there is a memo going around in the highest neocon media circles to associate one's self to being a "libertarian". We are about to get a whole new lesson on what libertarian means.

That just pisses me off. I've heard that douche bag say on more than one occasion that Libertarians are just confused Liberals (modern, not classical).
“…I believe that at this point in history, the greatest danger to our freedom and way of life comes from the reasonable fear of omniscient State powers kept in check by nothing more than policy documents.”

No there is no "memo" going around

But they are starting to understand that "libertarian" is a buzzword these days and they want to be on the cutting edge of the bandwagon. Too bad they are about 35 years behind.

    Plus LRC.

    Minus "Cato, Reason, etc."

Really, you guys are being waaay too hard on Reason and Cato.

Reason has offered a fairly objective perspective we could learn from if we weren't always looking for intellectual feel-good orgies. As for Cato, they've been solid supporters of the libertarian movement and have given the movement (and laissez-faire economic policy) much credibility, being objective enough to earn much influence in the media.

We can't be expecting every ally to bend over for us whenever we demand. These are great institutes which have been around far longer than most of us have, and deserve far more respect than we give it, perhaps even more for doing what they've been doing for so long when faced with pressure from radical libertarians.
