What sort of people are voting for this lunatic and why would Rand suggest that he would support him?

Perhaps because Rand knows this guy is being cut loose by the GOP who clearly don't want him to run again. Perhaps he thinks he can have an influence on him. I seriously doubt it. The guy is a warmonger lunatic. Not even smart enough to be a neocon.

Rand should just challenge him in the Primary. Is that possible?

I know very little about him but would suggest doing some additional research. Someone has been actively making changes to his wiki over the last 2 months vs historical trends. I would suggest reading through the page history.

He has voted against every bailout since 2007, and has even struck out at the Fed, somewhat. These are the things Rand is referring to, as well as others. Mr. Bunning hasn't been perfect, but he has stood strong of late. He opposed TARP, while McConnell cheer leaded it. I believe that's why the squeeze is one, Bunning opposed the GOP!

Well I found one good thing

Bunning was also the only member of the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs to have opposed Ben Bernanke for Chief of the Federal Reserve. He said it was because he had doubts that Bernanke would be any different from Alan Greenspan

But seriously... it's because you don't want to come across as attacking the party unless the guy isn't popular at all.

Compare that to Mitch McConnell's pick to replace Bunning, and then forcing Bunning to retire so Mitch can get a buddy in, the answer could be YES!

What this looks like to me is: Dr. Paul sees Bunning being pressured out of the GOP for opposing them on TARP, and a few other things. Looks like Rand is saying if you root him out, you'll have to deal with me.

Instead of attacking Bunning, we should be focusing on the real problem in Kentucky: Mitch McConnell!

Like many politicians, Bunning started off much better than he got over time. He was certainly an improvement when first elected.

I would strongly urge Rand's supporters to follow Dr. Paul's example and refrain from personal attacks. Bunning is well known and generally well liked in the state. Rand will need his supporters to win the seat. There is, however, a sense among many that he has stayed too long and not up to the job like he once was.

Let's not unnecessarily create enemies when we need friends.

Rand Paul is a fresh face, quietly polite in his speaking manner, and generally on the same
wavelength as his father, the last thing we need to do is to alienate the older voters of the dude
who once had the full confidence of the hard core g.o.p people in the state of kentucky, a state
that tends to like the idea of a smaller gov't at the federal level. if Rand Paul can be positioned
as NOT BEING politics as usual, i sense a coalition builder potentiality. the elders of both parties
know there is a "throw the bums out" discontent building, so to see feckless democrat spending
after debilitating feckless republican budgets is something that would not thrill the older voters...
keep in mind before our burst bubble... g.w bush DOUBLED over our national debt in his eight
years, and barack obama's stimulus approach has the debt doubling over once more in FIVE years!
