Merrill Lynch Funds after BoA nationalization

I have a very close family member who has a Merrill Lynch Fund of some type. To my knowledge it is not common stock in the investment bank. I advised them to cash it out over one year ago but they did not listen. What is a viable hypothesis to the future of funds Merrill Lynch manages when BoA becomes nationalized?

He has money in one of their funds, or he owns (owned) Merrill stock?

If its the former, he's not in any particular danger--but he ought to transfer out of their funds and into funds at a solvent institution, just in case. If its the latter, he now owns stock in BoA, which he needs to sell IMMEDIATELY before he loses everything to nationalization.
