Thumbs down Hussein B.O. Pledges Public Works on a Vast Scale
Obama Pledges Public Works on a Vast Scale
President-elect Barack Obama promised Saturday to create the largest public works construction program since the inception of the interstate highway system a half century ago as he seeks to put together a plan to resuscitate the reeling economy.

With jobs evaporating and the recession deepening, Mr. Obama began highlighting elements of the economic recovery program he is trying to fashion with Congressional leaders in hopes of being able to enact it shortly after being sworn in on Jan. 20. His address on Saturday followed the report on Friday indicating that the country lost 533,000 jobs in November alone, bringing the total number of jobs lost over the past year to nearly 2 million.

Mr. Obama’s remarks showcased his ambition to expand the definition of traditional work programs for the middle class, like infrastructure projects to repair roads and bridges, to include new-era jobs in technology and so-called green jobs that reduce energy use and global warming emissions. “We need action — and action now,” Mr. Obama said in an address broadcast Saturday morning on radio and YouTube.

Mr. Obama’s plan, if enacted, would be in part a government-directed industrial policy, with lawmakers and administration officials picking winners and losers among private projects and raining large amounts of taxpayer money on them.

It would cover a range of programs to expand broadband Internet access, to make government buildings more energy efficient, to improve information technology at hospitals and doctors’ offices, and to upgrade computers in schools.

What happens when all of these public works projects are finished? Won't those extra jobs vanish and create a recession?

Then O can simply hire the people to tear down the public works boondoggles they just built.

Then he can pay them more to build them back again!

Hire one half of the unemployed to dig holes, and the other half to fill them! It's a win/win for everyone!

By the time the light bulb changers have finished replacing all the incandescent bulbs in every public building with CFL bulbs, the first CFL bulbs will probably start burning out and need to be replaced. Light Bulb Changer would be a very secure job.

Seriously, there is soooo much wrong with this plan - particularly the part about electronic medical records and connecting all doctors' offices and hospitals to the internet - I hardly know where to begin.

I think it's funny that people think that government taking away resources from private hands (e.g. money, cement, workers, electricity, etc.) will actually improve the economy. Then we have increased interest rates when government takes on debt and eventually increased inflation when government monetizes that debt... what could possibly be good about a massive public works program?

    Absolutely nothing.

    Nice article:

Paradoxically, the totalitarian state never reached its ultimate goal. However, it gave the illusion of doing so. As soon as one goal was reached, it was replaced by another. Such was the case in Stalin's Russia. Stalin implemented a series of Five Year Plans in an effort to build up the industrial might of the Soviet Union. Production quotas were constantly announced well before they had been reached in order to supply the illusion that the Five Year Plan was working.

But before the Five Year Plan had run its course, another Five Year Plan was announced. Hopefully, you can intuit the psychological necessity of such an act on Stalin's part.

I think it's more like bringing up the irony that we overthrew a Hussein in another country recently than Muslims are bad Presidents or some nonsense.

How is the title slander? His initials are B.O. right? And his middle name is "Hussein" right? So please explain to me what is slanderous?

Why not just call him by his last name, the way every other person is referred to? Emphasizing Hussein is just irrelevant and it's really just more of a fear mongering tactic, the same ones neocons have been using for years.

How many people referred to Bush as "W"? Or "GW"?

Are you implying that the name "Hussein" instills fear? I definitely didn't imply that.

The only times I ever used W was to differentiate him from his father, otherwise, I've seen many more people say Bush. I actually saw W actively used by his campaign back in 2004.

But anyway, I did notice Hussein was used as a tactic during the elections by far right wingnuts to somehow infer that an Arab name meant that he was a terrorist who would kill everyone or something. I don't know what your intentions were, but I'll take your word for it.

Obama is not Arab. Even McCain knows that:
