I'd say the enormous power of central planning encourages them even more! Ask your econ teacher if he/she's ever head of the Soviet Union. sheesh.

"I am surprised at the suddenness, as well as the greatness of this revolution. Is not the change we have seen astonishing? What man, two years ago, would have thought it possible?"
- John Adams, July 3, 1776
Unfortunately, bashing capitalism has become the new trend. The real problem is government intervention, but people are too lazy to read and figure it out for themselves.
I'm afraid this latest economic disaster will ensure our fate (more big gov, more centrally planned econ) and there doesn't seem to be any hope of going the other direction.
Teacher is probably using the bastardized version of capitalism (Corporatism/Crony Capitalism).
Because evil doers who don't care about the poor will rise to power or something. You know, the typical socialist argument.
The only good reason he could come up with for why we should use gold is because "gold doesn't rust." He seriously said that. I kept waiting for him to say it retains value or something... but he didn't.
I want to say that socialism encourages Tyrants..
but I just cant get past the fact that all forms of Government except a limited one encourage tyrants and psychopaths and all sorts of scum. (see Switzerland)
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual. - Thomas JeffersonI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
- Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear
