    BJ Lawson Debate

I heard in another thread, on the Ron Paul Candidates pages, that Lawson was due to debate Price. Any news of this? Any video, if it has occurred?

"You know not what you are given, but forever will you know what has been taken away from you..."

Great quotes from BJ's closing statement:

"This false dichotomy is poisoning the debate"

"We have to start moving to a more sustainable objective"

"I refuse to be defined by a label... You cannot define me! I am an American offering myself to you for this important job of representing [my] district and, by extension, the United States of America."

The more I watch this debate, the more solid my opinion of David Price as a schmuck becomes.

I didn't think so... His stammering and shakiness was very noticeable, not to mention how silly he looked by reading off his cheat sheet during almost every response.

.. Lawson wiped the floor with him.
NC doesn't need ThomTillis as the Republican nominee for US Senate.

At certain points I thought he was a good actor (said that when I was near the beginning of the vid), and then yes other times he train wrecked. Like when Lawson said: "I simply asked what gives us the right to select leaders of other countries", Prices reaction was... amusing.

Edit: Just finished the vid, great closing statements by Lawson, the crowd erupted in my headphones.

he needs to pull an Obama. Run for senator, 2 years later, run for President, and, probably, win.

    Opening Statements

Lawson gave a nice, impassioned speech, but Prices's calm, well-spoken reply won out.

    WINNER: PRICE

    Research Funding

Price opened stronger, extolling the virtues of federal research funding in such a way that it made Lawson's opening attacks look paranoid. But when the camera panned back to Lawson and showed him sitting relaxed in his chair holding Price's press release, the tables turned. Lawson's rebuttal levelled Price and got him a round of applause, and Price finished up by stammering aimlessly.

    WINNER: LAWSON

    Bailout and Economy

Lawson came out of the gate strong by attacking Price and earned applause within the first ten seconds of talking, an act that shut down Price's halting endorsement of the status quo that preceded it. Price followed up with a solid but mediocre rebuttal and Price ended it with style. Neither candidate wowed but Lawson edged it out.

    WINNER: LAWSON

    Domestic Issues

Lawson opened first, kinda ducking the question in a mediocre plea. Price hits him hard on the reply saying that he didn't answer a question earlier about research. Lawson's rebuttal AGAIN ducked the question and Price finished him off by calling him on it during his surrebuttal.

    WINNER: PRICE

    Energy

Price opened with a middling stump speech that hit at Lawson's party but not at Lawson directly. Lawson countered with a grassroots greenie speech about shifting the tax burden that outflanked Price's "green" credentials. Price goes for the jugular by attacking both Lawson's claim that corporations are waiting for cap and trade and Lawson's faith in the free market. Lawson's brief reply does well by itself but doesn't full counter the vitriole of Price's attack. It's a close one overall, but...

    WINNER: PRICE

    Civil Liberties

The questioner hit first, attacking Price for voting for the Patriot Act. Price spent his opening trying to get back his bearings, and his speech was slilted and wordy - he tried to turn it around but couldn't pull it off. Lawson's brief opening came with ease as he got to build on the questioner's initial attack and add a few more bad votes by Price. Price offered a solid rebuttal that calls Lawson on his attacks, but came up against a brick wall as Lawson expertly fended him off.

    WiNNER: LAWSON

    Education

Lawson opened by ducking the question but got a round of applause on it. Price hit him hard early, turning the "Constitutionality of a program" argument into a laugh line - even though it doesn't get any laughs - and finishes up by advocating the status quo. Lawson rebutted strong with some solid verbiage that countered some of Price's accusations, but Price finished strong as well as Lawson never spoke directly to doing away with the Department of Education. Sorry to say, but...

    WINNER: PRICE

    Foreign Policy

Price went first and read a stump speech that attacked Lawson for the traditional GOP position despite Lawson's dimetrical opposition to that position - it was weak and tame. Lawson hit back with a bunch of buzzwords - it was also weak and tame. Price seized the opportunity, drawing a laugh during his rebuttal and hitting the "you're like George Bush" tennis ball back into Lawson's court. Lawson, after a brief formatting error that gave him a much needed moment to think of a reply, managed to spit out a thirty second rebuttal that eeked him a point.

    WINNER: LAWSON

    Pakistan

Lawson hit first with a tight speech about the importance of declaring war, but Price gave a middling defense of his strategy so neither one wowed. Lawson then totally gave away his rebuttal by asking Price an easily-avoidable question, and Price got a free minute to expound on whatever he wanted.

    WINNER: PRICE

    Closing

Price's closing went at Lawson up and down, and again tried to tie him to the GOP - he finished by pitching for Obama. But it's tough to counter the last word, and Lawson took advantage of his free reign, getting a standing ovation from the clearly partisan crowd. Price spoke well but Lawson worked 'em like a conductor.

    WINNER: LAWSON

    AND THE FINAL SCORE:

    Price 5, Lawson 5

A TIE! In truth, both candidates did well and traded off winning rounds. Both also missed easy opportunities and slam dunks. I think that if there's a second debate, Lawson will get better when Price will get worse.
