A new breed of urban Catholic high school asks disadvantaged kids to work for their tuition.

A very interesting story, I think. This is type of school that makes sense to me, in man cases, since the kids aren't dependent on the government, or even charity for their education. Instead, they are self-supporting to a large degree, teaching responsibility instead of dependence.

This is an awesome program. The Jesuits have done a lot of good in the field of education. Hope the model spreads.

Agreed. Were I in the position to open up a school in the city, this is exactly how I would do it. Make the kids work for their own education, but enable them to work in an environment that will help them succeed, as opposed to the Burger Shack down the street.

Ha! I linked a similar article on the Ray Cristo schools to Kade in an argument. Excellent schools.

Glad to see I'm not the only one trying to pay my own way through college without government or bank financing.

Actually, I've gotten in trouble with the law a few times over the past 2 years and I'm in debt to the state of Louisiana a few grand.

So, I've been out of college for the last semester trying to repay it, however, it's time to re-enroll, and I've found that I'm still flat broke and in debt to the State.

I'll probably try to get Federal Grant money this next coming semester.

The Government has been screwing me over through taxes and laws most of my life, and I get nothing in return..... Well, except protection from the Muslim Boogeyman that hates me for my freedom!

I had a feeling they were going to talk about Christ the King...

I love the Jesuits and the Marists - to them education is a must and they take care of their students.

Brilliant idea, I hope more schools do this. It provides a good work ethic and helps them excel in their chosen major.

Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.
Lost one round but the price wasn't anything,
A knife in the back and more of the same.

That's really awesome! I'm mildly surprised they can even get away with letting the kids work 5 days a month instead of making them go to school every single day, but this is a really great alternative to public education. I may be agnostic, but I went to a Jesuit high school myself...and going there was probably the best decision I've ever made.
