    Note from Bernalillo County GOP Convention

    Notes from Bernalillo County Republican Convention

    * Much Udall bashing. GOP are clearly afraid of him in the general election. I concur.
    * Concern about overly democratic wards and districts.
    * Someone dubbed "The Colonel" who is absolutely convinced that it's the democrats that are the instigators of vote fraud, and still bitching about the democrats still bitching about Florida in 2000... wants more republican volunteers at the polls.
    * Eerie silence whenever Darren White's name was mentioned.
    * Most speeches by candidates present lacking references to the more controversial "republican" talking points... i.e. immigration, Iraq, gay marriage, etc etc
    * Pearce was the highest running candidate to show up. He gave a short speech more tailored to the Ron Paul Republicans. (Less taxes, more liberty, etc etc.)
    * Ben Lujan was there.
    * Jay Hone was there.
    * A couple Ron Paul Republicans showed up late, and were a bit confused about the proceedings (understandably). Things got a little tense for a while. They accused the party of making up rules, which, in actually we were making up rules and already had made up the rules by voting earlier in the meeting. So, show up early, make sure you understand what's going on.
    * Initially, 137 of 156 needed delegates to the state convention were elected, with (luckily enough) 19 ward alternates. When this was realized a motion was made to elevate those 19 alternates to full delegate status. But...
    * There were still 5 nominees who were not already alternates wanting to run at large.
    * This is where most of the time was wasted, trying to decide who would be disenfranchised and whether or not we were breaking any party rules etc etc but in the end we voted to go ahead and elevate the 19 alternates, and the 5 running at large would become alternates.
    * In truth, 5 alternates is not enough, and it is extremely likely that those 5 will end up going to Las Cruces. I'm betting that Bernco will not even have it's full compliment of 156 delegates at state... another sign that the Republican Party is in trouble.

    * Craig (the meetup organizer) did really well at the convention. He seems to have the charisma and public speaking ability needed for events like this.
    * We seriously could have gotten as many Ron Paul supporters in to the state convention as we wanted. Just estimating from crowd that was there, we got all 25 (again, estimating, Craig should have the full number available later) supporters in that showed up (just because EVERYONE who wanted to be a delegate got in). We essentially didn't have to vote at all. But had 156 Ron Paul people showed up, we could have voted them ALL IN.
    * For future conventions: DON'T FORGET THE PROXIES!!! All somebody had to do was send a note nominating themselves to become a state delegate, with their $25, and they could have run. Hardly anyone did this. Check your local county rules to see if this is possible. (We cannot do this for the state convention, everyone elected must be present in person to run for national status).
    * There was much Ron Paul support beyond the meetup group. There were some established Republican insiders who genuinely did support Ron Paul.
    * Not one McCain bumper sticker, lots of Ron Paul.
    * Quite a few Joe Cararro (CD1) supporters. The Ron Paul meetup groups should get their full support behind Cararro to defeat Darren White in the primary.

    * We had to say the Pledge of Allegiance twice, the first time to Fernando C. de Baca's tie. BCGOP forgot to bring a flag, they must hate America.
    * No flag lapel pins. BCGOP must hate America.
    * Uncomfortable moment when the teen choir from a local church chose to sing "Dixie" during their medley of "patriotic songs". Maybe it's just me, but I don't care for that song... I noticed other people at the convention snickering during this song. Maybe they could have chose a song more appropriate to New Mexico?

    We didn't have very good results in San Juan county (Farmington), we only took 1 of 31 delegate spots. We did get all the top alternate spots however, and Las Cruces is 6 hours away, so there's a chance we can still produce a decent showing. If we could have had 20 more Ron Paul supporters show up willing to go to Las Cruces we could have taken home all 31 spots.

    "This political train-wreck Republicans face can largely be traced to Bush’s philosophical metamorphosis from a traditional, non-interventionist conservative to the neoconservatives’ exemplar of a 'War President', and his positioning of the Republicans as the 'War Party'."

    Nicholas Sanchez on Bush's legacy, September 30, 2007.
