    Thank you for the link. An interesting read. I would rather my Senator represent me instead of working for the government. I think this (state leaders picking senators) would lead to more pork spending for the states as states try to get whatever they can at the Federal feed trough (our tax dollars). I think this would definately be a threat to "citizen sovereignity" mentioned in your link since the senators would not be responsible to the citizens of their state- only to the ruling elites of the state. It would be more open to corruption and less subject to the threat of a senator being voted out of office.

    That's why the house controls the introduction of Revenue bills.

    Also, consider that the large trough of cash is the result of other deteriorations of the constitution, such as the Federal Reserve Act, and the Sixteenth amendment. Before those, the constitutional ways to get revenue was through excise taxes, tariffs, and direct taxes on the States (not the people). All 3 of these happened within the same year.
