Washington State Geography Lesson for Non-Washingtonians

Okay- there have been a lot of posts about Paul winning 46% in Spokane or Asotin or Stevens county but having 21% of the vote state wide. First, geography 101- Washington is divided by the Cascade mountains- the East side is very much a "Red" state- very rural, a lot of agriculture. Spokane is in Eastern Washington as is Asotin and Stevens county. Those counties also have more of a constitutionalist bent.

The west side of the state is where most of the people in the state reside- in Seattle (King County), Tacoma (Pierce County) and Everett (Snohomish County). Kitsap County and Thurston County also have sizable populations.

About 1/5th to 1/4 of the entire state population resides in King County- there are also many military bases on the West side- There are naval bases in Kitsap and Snohomish counties- 4 or 5 aircraft carriers and numerous subs are based in the area. Fort Lewis, one of the largest army bases in the country, is in Pierce County- there are a couple of Stryker brigades there. McChord Air Force base is also in Pierce County.

So, when you see results from the Eastern side of the state showing Paul getting 40-50% of the vote, it is not a grand conspiracy that he is only getting 21% statewide. The several thousand fine folks in beautiful Asotin County or few thousand in SPokane (Go Zags!!!) who voted for Paul cannot keep up with the 250,000 registered republicans in King County. Please save the conspiracy theories for later.

I will cut and paste from another thread and explain why many of those undecideds are RP supporters, in my opinion...

A lot of those uncommitted delegates are Ron Paul supporters. The reason why is we were told by RP state headquarters NOT to identify ourselves as Ron Paul supporters when we first caucused. However, the way the state GOP ran this thing is when everyone signed in they asked us to put our presidential preference on the sheet. I put Ron Paul- but was hesitant to. I spoke to other people in my precinct who were Ron Paul delegates who put down uncommitted. We thought that after the delegates were chosen they would ask us who we supported. Instead, after we picked delegates, the PCOs wrote down our presidential preference from the sign-in sheet.

As a result, there is a significant amount of the 10 or 11% showing "undecided" who are Paul supporters. Their thought process on this was we'd sneak more delegates under the radar, but right now, in my opinion, we don't need more delegates under the radar, we need to win a friggn' state so we get press coverage.

How bout Stevens County then in NE Wasington (I think bordering Canada). These results posted by CNN in the "County" portion either have to be an error or fraud. Hopefully, just an error because this seems so highly unprobable.

Um yes, because the state gop site hasn't updated but once every 90 minutes or so- that is where CNN is getting their numbers from. Let me ask you a pretty smple question- if I am a Ron Paul delgate to the county convention (which I am), and then the county convention rolls around and they tell me, "You're not a delegate. John McCain won that delegate.", don't you think I would complain?

Your postshows absolutely no knowledge of how this system works- they are counting all paper ballots- in my legislative district there were 53 ballots to tally. In my county there are 6 legislative districts. In some of these counties there are only 1 or 2 people counting everything.

The state GOP site isn't showing county by countyr esults at all so I have no idea where CNN is getting their numbers from- I can only assume from the county GOP web pages- I have seen only 2 counties posted on their respective county GOP web pages- King and Spokane.

When was it supposed to be a win? Polls had him at 6% and, just today, media outlets were acting like he had just dropped out.

Being so competitive for first, with a possible win in terms of county delegates, is extremely impressive and unexpected.

Hey you guys in Vancouver got mad props from the Huckabee people in Pierce County today- they said a bunch of you drove up to a GOP get together at a casino in Lakewood when I-5 was flooded out and drove 3 or 4 hours to get there for the straw poll.

    My bad- Vancouver rocks-

By the way, all the other candidates' supporters were begging us Ron Paul people to please vote fr the GOP candidate and not defect to a third party...lol

I lived in Washington State for years. I was the vice chair of the Clallam County LP. I would think that there would be proportionally more RP supporters in the green wet populated Western half than the conservative eastern half. The military should help-not hurt us. That's where all those donations came from.

The wierdest thing is that "Other" is beating everyone. What about the freakin' exit polls? How many of those "other" votes are ours?

I was asked that by an older gentleman tonight, who insisted on informing me that Ron Paul is a Libertarian. I thanked him for the information, and shared with him that libertarianism is nothing more than the philosophy of liberty, and that Reagan brought a lot of libertarians into the party. Then I asked him is people who believed in liberty belonged in the Republican party. He was dumbfounded, and said that this is a discussion for another time. I never did get a chance to answer his question about whether I'd be voting for a republican.

The answer is yes: I'll be writing in Dr. Paul's name on my ballot. There's no way in hell that I will throw my vote away on McCain.

I think a significant amount- there was a lot of confusion about what we should have listed when we signed in at the precinct- listing ourselves as Ron Paul supporters or uncommitted. Several people in my legislative district listed themselves as uncommitted when they were Ron Paul supporters. Someone else in the forum said RP supporters were told in a conference call to list themselves as RP supporters, however the information for download on the web page does not say that.

It had to be the CFR. The CFR is God and controls all and we're just little bitches who should sit down and blame everything on them, even if we ourselves our the losers.

I mean, it couldn't be that Ron Paul went completly against the grain of the GOP and all most of us did to help was float a blimp.

I don't know why RP would want to do that - now with all those undeclared delegates, RP get's yet another "loss". Nothing will EVER happen if RP can't even win one friggin state.
