I am officially a victim of obamacare

me and the other janitor at school was told yesterday that they are going to do a trial run with an outside cleaning company to outsource our jobs. we were told by a man who makes around $200,000 a year (the superintendent) that they have to do this in order to save $35k a year. he said it was going to take a crew of 4 men or more per day over the course of the school hours AND during the night to clean the same as we do in 1 eight hr day. so wow to that! neither one of us even take out school insurance either.

he said it was more to do with getting rid of the benefit costs, mostly health insurance, that the school provides. he said that even though we dont personally have insurance through the school as others do, they are required to offer it to everyone and it is just going to get to expensive to continue.

the only bright side to this news is that there are 2 other spots that need to be filled at another school and we have been offered those spots. however, eventually all janitor jobs will be outsourced in the future.

    $#@! you obama!

Wow. I remember you were worried about that happening. Sorry that you were right.

Really sorry to hear that. I'd start with letters to the editor, your congressman/senators, then see what company they're outsourcing to and see what the possibilities are of getting a job with them.

I mean, you'd start out knowing at least one of their jobs pretty thoroughly. Worth a shot?

Oh wow! You just triggered an idea. SatchelMcQueen, maybe you could start your own cleaning company, and get their contract. My Dad and his friends had to do that back in the day. The retailer that employed him decided to use subcontractors for all their installation work. The guys that got laid off formed a company, and didn't really miss a days work.

Well, except for my Dad. The retailer told him that they wanted him to stay on as an adjuster - a guy who would go out and repair things that the subcontractors messed up. He told them that he would rather strike out with his friends, but the retailer said if he went, those guys would never get a single job from the retailer. Suddenly his partners decided that him joining them might not work out. So Dad stayed behind until they laid him off a couple years later. Then he joined the guys that had left. But only after soaking up every dime of unemployment he could get.

Even better! He and the other fellow could do that. Company of 1 or 2--no/fewer issues w/Obamacare, right?

Lower cost for the school, and you both already know the job.

Yes. I'm hardly an expert but I think you have to have a minimum of 50 before the employer mandate kicks in. But if the company pays, premiums are deductible as an expense. But he doesn't need the insurance so it's a non-issue.

This happened where I work, too. The lab I work in is now being outsourced; I still have my job, though.

Sorry to hear this happened. As I said before, if you decide to form your own company I can set up some online marketing for you. I hope things get better soon and let me know if I can help.

So, it begins. My son, who is 26, in grad school and works part time has his own insurance. Lives at home free all through college and now grad school etc. etc. Let me add a big supporter of Obamacare. (We've had some interesting debates and we just agree to disagree to keep the peace.) He just received a letter from the provider that stated that The Affordable Care Act will begin Jan. 2014 and he should expect a "substantial" increase in his monthly premium. I just said welcome to the real world and be careful what you wish for.

Sarchel, sorry to hear about your job, but it looks like one door closed and another one opened. You were fortunate in that respect.
“But let it not be said that we did nothing. Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security. Understanding the magnificent rewards of a free society makes us unbashful in its promotion, fully realizing that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty.”

    Sorry, man.

Satchel I think starting your own company is the best course of action. You have the connections you can use to get the contract. Please tell us how things turn out.

    Make Your Story Known

You should call in to all of the mainstream, conservative radio talk shows and tell them your story. I'm sure Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and/or Mark Levin would love to hear how "Obamacare" has messed up your work situation. It just gives them another reason to bash it on the air.

Who is going to clean up the kids puke during the day, take out the lunchroom trash after lunchtime, etc?

  26. #23
That sucks and all, but this is a perfect time to make sure you CLIMB THE LADDER! Make the best effort you can to get OUT of these low-skill jobs. (I did the janitor gig through college, three years). They are ALWAYS dumping on the easily replaced labor. Always.

As others have said, a try at being the subcontracting company may be an option. It looks like you should be able to underbid that new subcontractor as far as the number of people required.

Another aspect of this story that has not been mentioned is the "follow the money" motive. Who is this new subcontractor related to? Who do they know? How did they get the contract? Did it go out for multiple bids (which can be a charade anyway)? It seems strange that a bidder that requires so many more workers would be chosen.

Future classes of citizens; government employees (well off), business owners w/ government contracts (well off), and the rest - working class MBA's w/ free healthcare, free college, free phones, free etc., driving small cars on congested roads, living in government housing. Pushing a broom will earn the same "pay" as being a fluid dynamicist, both require aforementioned MBA.

    Decades away, but inevitable.

edit: but at least you'll still have the "freedom" to own guns. A .22 to be exact. Single shot. Must be stored at the government approved gun range, in a locker, key is held by the certified proprietor.

Impoverishing the nation, little by little...by design.

    Sorry man.

thanks for the comments guys, but they will not allow me and my partner to clean the school even if we underbid the cleaning company. this is a system wide deal they are implementing very slowly with this company. and some of you are correct about the money trail. im digging in on that right now. if they did it all at once there would be an uproar. but if they do it one school at a time, no one will care. whos going to make a stink about 2 mens jobs being gone? no one in this town. really I cant make much of a stir because id be fired in 2 seconds. until my wife starts work, which is 9 months away at least, I am just stuck. however I do think that if this type of thing is going to be done in the name of saving money, then I think the best place to start would be at the top with the total elimination of a few positions, or an all across the board 3% pay cut for all involved and cut out all of the wasteful spending these schools are involved in. I cant tell you how many books I threw out last summer that were never even opened. they tried these cleaning services many years ago and everyone said it was a disaster.

I suppose my main plan is to get out of the school system since these jobs will eventually be gone anyway. im wanting to work for myself doing pressure washing, cleaning, car cleaning, handyman type stuff. kind of an all in one type service. also I got my comedy thing im working on but that's a long shot at the least. so I do have a plan, its just I have to make this gig last for a bit longer.

bottom line though, if not for Obama care, this wouldn't be happening.
