This is why I don't lump sheriffs in with cops. There are a lot of people (mostly liberals) out there who think sheriffs' offices are redundant and want to transition to police only. I think it's a huge mistake. Yes, it is an executive branch. But having that wing of the executive branch be accountable directly to the people rather than an unelected 'yes man' such as a police chief answering to a mayor is important.
My sheriff is a democrat and he's the only democrat I've ever voted for. He's a damn good sheriff and a humble man, and his deputies are not unlike him.
