CNN Poll: Rand Paul goes where his father never went

Washington (CNN) - Rand Paul has done something his father never did - top the list of potential Republican presidential candidates in a national poll.

According to a new CNN/ORC International survey, 16% of Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP say they would be likely to support the senator from Kentucky for the 2016 nomination.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee, garnered 15%, with longtime Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who's considering another bid for the White House, at 11%.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a 2008 GOP presidential candidate, is the only other Republican tested in the survey to crack double digits.

The poll's sampling error means that statistically it's not a win for Paul, but his finish is a breakthrough for his family.

A national Quinnipiac poll found Paul tied with Ryan in January for the top spot. That appears to be as close as either Rand Paul or his father, Ron Paul, has ever come to nabbing first place all by himself in any national poll.

I'm not worried about Rand's lead at this point. Maintaining that will be up to Rand and whether the establishment allows him to maintain it. We have no control over the second, but Rand has complete control over the first.

Among the other potential presidential hopefuls in the new CNN survey, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is at 9%, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas each at 8%.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida registered 5% and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who battled eventual GOP nominee Mitt Romney deep into the 2012 GOP primary and caucus calendar, polled 3%.

"With a crowded field and no clear frontrunner among the potential candidates, we should expect to see constant fluctuation in the amount of support most candidates get and the order of finish, so it would be easy to read too much into these numbers," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

While Paul is only 1 point ahead of Ryan, his placement is symbolic.

"Remember the 2011-2012 presidential season, when at least five GOP candidates - Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Herman Cain - topped our polls at one time or another?" said Holland. "Notice who was never in first place during that topsy-turvy time: Ron Paul."

The elder Paul, then a congressman from Texas, also never managed to get double-digit support in national polling when he ran for the GOP nomination in 2008. Paul also ran for President in 1988 as a libertarian candidate.

Correction to CNN's article: Rand Paul has actually topped 3 more national polls other than the two mentioned in the article - PPP 10/31 (tied with Christie), Quinnipiac 9/29 and PPP 7/21.

Idk, I think I'd actually like Rand to build as large of a lead as possible, as early as possible. I view it like the stock market -- what goes down doesn't necessarily mean it is due to go back up. The more Rand gets vetted *now*, the fewer negative news cycles he will have to endure when it really counts. The primaries are dominated by bombshell hack pieces, and the last man standing wins. I want people to get used to the idea that Rand is the frontrunner, and comfortable with the idea of him running against Hillary or whoever the dem nominee is. That's something Ron would have given an arm and a leg for.

As one who worked as a judge in the primary of Texas, in Austin, yet in a highly Old-Guard-GOP Neocon area, I can attest to the FACT that at least 66 percent of those who voted Republican voted for PAUL.

It is a good point, and a positive. Ron was hurt by the fact that he had not been to Israel or the rest of the middle east. I recall it coming up in at least one debate and Ron predictably gave an answer along the lines of "I don't think we need to go to the middle east in order to read the constitution." Which I know makes all of us cheer; but just isn't going to cut it with most voting americans. Rand has cut off that attack by visiting Israel and Palestine. He especially did it well in the GOP primary by going there along with some influential evangeicals -- as opposed to going on some flotilla of socialists. IIRC, Rand turned his visit even further into a positive upon his return by stating in an interview that he was surprised and happy to learn that not all Israelis had the same view as AIPAC or the US medias portrayal and that a great many were against our foreign aid and interventionism over there. I like that Rand has an upcoming trip to Guatemala to perform eye surgeries for charity; it will further give him credibility about talking about conditions south of our border and turning that into a way to discuss alternatives to obamacare.

If the 2016 presidential election were around the corner, a new poll would have good news for Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee.

A poll by CNN/ORC International released Sunday showed Paul, the Kentucky senator and Tea Party favorite, narrowly leading 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee Ryan for the votes of Republicans, 16% to 15%. They are followed by Perry, the Texas governor who had a disastrous 2012 campaign with 11% and Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor who won the 2008 Iowa caucuses, with 10%.

As one who worked as a judge in the primary of Texas, in Austin, yet in a highly Old-Guard-GOP Neocon area, I can attest to the FACT that at least 66 percent of those who voted Republican voted for PAUL.
I will, to my last day, know and state that the GOP actively flipped the votes for Romney and against Paul.
