Politician Suggest Taxpayers Give up Coffee, Cell Phones, TV and Internet to Pay for Potholes

This article has so skewed the facts of what happened that it is shocking. What happened is this: Scott McGolpin presented a chart showing how much money the average taxpayer spends every year on coffee, cable TV, cell phones and internet service. He then suggested that if the taxpayers gave up the afore mentioned "addictions" they could afford to pay higher taxes. This sparked an absolute taxpayer revolt in the Board of Supervisor's meeting room. All 8 speakers who gave public comment reminded the board that several supervisors opposed Measure M and at least 3 supervisors held up signs during the election saying "No New Taxes!" ( remember that Liz?). After public comment Salud Carbajal and Doreen Farr meekly told the full board and the public that they would not support raising taxes-at any level of government- to pay for road and bridge repairs.

Governor Jerry Brown has been looking north, too, as he set aside $9.4 million in his budget for a 6,000-person pilot program in California. McGolpin, whose car gets 38 miles per gallon on the highway, said he will be one of the first to volunteer and won’t be letting the idea of GPS monitoring his mileage get to*him.

Okay. This part of the article is absolutely stupid (like the rest wasn't).

For the last 20 years, California’s gas tax to pay for this work has stayed the same: 18.5 cents per gallon. In 2015 terms, the value of that 18.5 cents has been cut in half. And in the same two decades, cars have become twice as fuel-efficient, a trend that will only escalate in the years to come. Plunging gas prices haven’t helped, either.

What the hell does falling gas prices have to do with gas taxes? The gas tax is 18.5 cents per gallon no matter how much a gallon of gas costs. So if gas is $3.00 per gallon, the government gets 18.5 cents per gallon. If gas is $1.50 per gallon the government gets 18.5 cents per gallon. Actually cheaper gas should mean higher revenue. Why? Because when gas is $1.50 per gallon people are more willing to drive. Duh! How many people have cut down on road trips because of high gas prices? People tend to vacation closer to home. And high gas prices spur the growth of the electric car market, which the article also cites as a reason for lower tax revenue. So if gas prices drop there are more gas guzzlers on the road. Bad for the environment? Maybe. But great for gas tax revenue.

If politicians gave up their addiction to my money, I might be able to have coffee every day. Once every 4-6 months is about right, unless you count church where it's free. Even then, it would be about a cup a week, if that.

As it is, I'm supporting two US Senators, one US Congressman, and a number of state and local yahoos, who all live way better than I do. If I need a cup of coffee or a Diet Mt. Dew (keep your seat, donnay ) to help me go to work to pay all those taxes, then what's it to them?
