(Reuters) - Ukraine won a $27-billion international financial lifeline on Thursday, rushed through in the wake of Russia's annexation of Crimea, while Moscow's economy minister acknowledged that his country's growth would slow dramatically as funds flee abroad.

The International Monetary Fund announced a $14-18 billion standby credit for Kiev in return for tough economic reforms that will unlock further aid from the European Union, the United States and other lenders over two years, effectively pulling Kiev closer to Europe.

Ukraine's new leaders, in a step the ousted government had balked at, said on Wednesday it would raise the price of gas for domestic consumers by more than 50 per cent from May 1 and would raise prices further under a fixed timetable to 2018.

The move is certain to dent the popularity of Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk's interim government, but met the demands of the International Monetary Fund.

The Russian-Ukrainian free trade deal(s), offered discounted pricing by Russia energy companies(Gazprom and RosUkrEnergo, it was not subsidized by the Ukrainian government aka taxpayers. Now since those deals is busted, the already poor people of the Ukraine are going to be even poorer.

I'll wait for the next nail in the Ukrainian coffin when the puppet government buys from the western Military/Security Industrial Complexes... which will be paid for by the Ukrainian and American citizens with the same old inflationary related fees/taxes/costs and dilapidated infrastructure to follow... back to the future we go.

Ukraine is so done it is not even funny.The EU told them today that there is no way they can join in the near future,and for them near is 10-20 years.If Ukraine manages to get out of this and survive for 20 years it would take them to have such a leadership that in 20 years they would not need to join the EU.They owe money to everyone,most of their trade is dependent on Russia,militias are controlling parts of the country ( what makes it worse parts is that are parts that support the current government ) + they have the Russians who will wreak havoc in the South and East.If Augustus ,Philip II,Bismarck,Alexander II from Russia and Mehmed II would come from their graves they could not get them out of this mess,let alone some puppets.

Simon Johnson, former chief economist of the IMF and currenty a professor at MIT Sloan, gets it right:

The IMF is founded on the premise that it represents cooperation between all of the countries of the world. The reality is that it stands for and operationalizes US power, in cooperation with America’s closest allies.

Anyone who doubts that should review a recent letter orchestrated by the Bretton Woods Committee, addressed to Congressional leaders on behalf of an impressive array of former Republican and Democratic cabinet secretaries. The first paragraph reads, “The IMF has always been a valuable tool for advancing US national interests globally.”[...]The US does not dictate what happens at the IMF, but it does have a disproportionate influence.

The letter Johnson cites states this:

The IMF has always been a valuable tool for advancing U.S. national interests globally, from helping navigate the Latin crisis of the 1980s to supporting the Arab Spring countries today with policy advice, technical assistance, and financial support. During the recent, unprecedented financial crisis, the IMF intensified support for affected countries and helped to stabilize their economies and maintain growth. It is important that the United States support the Fund, because of the returns it brings to our nation going forward.

In February, before the coup even occurred in Ukraine, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew told a group at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco:

At the core they have an economic crisis and they are going to need to deal with it. And the mechanism that's best for Ukraine to deal with it would be to come to the IMF and have a package where they put in place economic reforms where they get the support that they need in exchange for the steps to fix their economy.

After three weeks of urgent negotiations with the interim government of Ukraine and in an atmosphere of great power competition, the International Monetary Fund announced on Thursday an agreement to provide up to $18 billion in loans over two years to prevent the country’s default.

It should be noted this money isn't going to the people of Ukraine. It is going to the banksters who have previously loaned money to Ukraine. And the loans will keep Ukraine under the thumb of the U.S.
