There's a quote from Washington to his portrait painter, where he basically says "... the happiness of the people... is the end of government." We know what "end" he's talking about: he's talking about the goal, but wouldn't it be awesome if - bear with me - if he meant the happiness of the people is the END of government? Washington was closer to the truth than he knew, and in all fairness I don't see a contradiction in terms, when I say our first President, paradoxically limited by his understanding, had grasped a truth...

The goal of every government is to grow. It has no amibitions beyond that. What will the dog do when it finally catches the car? Probably use it to chase the next car.
Yep. And the way to achieve those goals, agendas, and ambitions is to gain more power for the government in which they operate. Tools of the beast.
