Defense Priorities
Rand says he flew to Dover w/ president to pay his respects to the two dead soldiers. He said they deserve better.
He says the Afghanistan effort is 'mission creep' and a 'no clear mission', 'there is no end'
'These papers make clear that doing nothing is not an option for senators or members of Congress'
'More bombs dropped than at any other year since 2006'
Ranking Member Maggie Hassan (D-NH) made sure she got in the neocon line 'to stop attacks on the U.S'. I suspect she has military contractor donors.
Rand just said that he suspects Afghani's receiving money are keeping sex slaves (dancing boys) and that he had an amendment to certify that this wasn't the case but it was defeated overwelmingly.
The IG can't answer questions on the metrics of success because its 'classified'. He says they have no idea how many Afghan troops there are.
The IG says Afghanistan biggest export is by far narcotics
Lt. Gen Lute says terror networks in Afghanistan and Pakistan have largely been defeated and marginalized
Lt. Gen. Lute says there is a stalemate between Taliban and recognized Afghan govt'. Sustaining the stalemate is expensive.. about $50bn a year to keep the military there
Recessed due to a vote.
Back...
Lt. Lute says the Taliban do not have ambitions outside Afghanistan i.e to attack the US homeland.
Lt. Lute says the Taliban has internal factions and are worried about cohesion should they agree to a ceasefire.
Lute says they can deal with counter terrorism from outside Afghanistan i.e from a base or something
Col. Davis now testifying.
He was deployed as part of Obama's surge, 150,000 troops. The Generals said they were winning.
'what I saw on the ground bears no resemblance to the rosy pictures painted by military leadership.
Col. Davis going into great detail about his missions and how the government troops wont engage the Taliban or enemy because its 'dangerous'. Taliban safely controls most of the countryside with no fear of gov't troops.
Col. Davis: 'We're there for nothing... We do missions for the sake of it. We kill some Taliban and they kill or maim Americans.'
Col. Davis: In 2015 he learned there was no strategy, we're just doing missions for the sake of it... and 5 years on it's still the same.
Mike Lee is there
Lee: 'The situation in Afghanistan is unacceptable'
'Facts have been hidden from Congress.'
Col. Davis says the dishonesty among the Pentagon and the Generals is institutionalized. They mislead Congress on purpose to keep the war going for as long as possible
Col. Davis: We should withdraw now. There's no strategy and the longer we're there the more lives will be lost.
He is on fire here.
Mike Lee: Lets get out.
Col. Davis: Amen
Col. Davis finishes by saying America would be more safe pulling out of Afghanistan.
And that's it. He was great witness!

Higher ups in Afghanistan keep these sex slaves and Congress doesn't care.
