Stealing the Motte: Critical Social Justice and the Principle of Charity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMUzdrQi0yA Subscribe to this podcast on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, YouTube, or by RSS. There is a rhetorical strategy called the “motte and bailey” that is getting increasingly famous lately. This is because it is one of the central tools of the Critical Social Justice movement. In that strategy, named after a kind of castle, a highly defensible “motte” position, like “we just want to treat people more fairly,” is maintained while also pushing a more radical “bailey” position, like “we need to radically remake our school systems so that no one can fail.” Activists advance the bailey and, when pressed on it, retreat to the motte until scrutiny and pressure go away, at which point they return to the bailey. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, your host James Lindsay explores the principle of charity in debate and dialogue in the context of the motte-and-bailey rhetorical strategy. His goal is to explain how the game of critical theories is not the same game the rest of us play in broadly liberal societies. In fact, the critical game seeks to disrupt and dismantle the liberal game and replace it with its own. Exploiting the principle of charity is one of the most common ways it can achieve this.

All of which can be encompassed in a simple, two-word phrase favored by the "woke" - and that phrase is "lived experience." "Lived experience" is the distilled essence of "woke" arbitrariness. In fact, I'm going to make this the subject of my next post in the Critical Theory thread. And here it is: The Poverty of "Lived Experiences" A sample:

Karamozov (04 October 2020) Political dissidents who get into arguments with Woke Folk over the exact nature of “systems of oppression” will inevitably find themselves confronted by rhetoric of a sort that often catches them off guard. This rhetoric is, by design, meant to paint political dissidents as myopic stooges who are unwilling to “listen to the Lived Experiences of marginalized people,” thus making them unwittingly complicit in systems of oppression. In this essay, we will explore the concept of “Lived Experiences” (capitalized and scare-quoted) as understood by Woke Folk, and why this conceptualization is fundamentally deficient. Political dissidents would be well advised to consider the arguments of this essay with care, as “Lived Experiences” are foundational to Woke Ideology; indeed, dismantling Woke notions of “Lived Experiences” may be the single most effective means of preserving the integrity of liberal democratic institutions from Woke encroachment. Consequently, a firm understanding of the topic and of how to address it when engaging with Woke ideology will be the focus of this essay. Before we can address what the concept of “Lived Experiences” entails, however, we must address its function. As was mentioned in an earlier essay, the empirical claims that are made by Woke Folk seldom survive evidential and analytical scrutiny. This is a problem for ideas in a culture which values such things as evidence and reasoned argument (as opposed to arguments from authority and moral blackmail.) Evidence and reasoned argument are the currency with which ideas earn their right to be taken seriously in liberal democracies. The tenets of Woke ideology, which are in frequent conflict with both, must therefore somehow be made adaptable to an environment which is hostile to dogmatic proclamations of unsubstantiated certainty, and the concept of “Lived Experiences” is the mechanism intended to achieve this.

Garrison didn't make an "argument," he made a cartoon - a cartoon contrasting Biden's statement about Antifa with the shooting in Denver. The tattoo wasn't being presented as "evidence" of anything. Garrison's implication of Antifa was made via the label on the gun, not via the tattoo. Except for the tattoo, there is nothing in the cartoon that indicates what (if any) actual person or event is being represented. The purpose of the tattoo is to ground the representation in the Denver shooting by Dolloff. The point of the cartoon is that Dolloff (as identified by the tattoo) is Antifa (as alleged by the big red "ANTIFA" label on the gun) - and that Antifa is thus not "just an idea."

Not only would it be a bad precedent, but it would also be unconstitutional. Any POTUS who tried this would be violating the Constitution. Which means he would have to have himself thrown into Gitmo. Which, of course, no POTUS would actually do. So it wouldn't even work in theory, let alone in reality ...

Ordered by the President to do what? Summarily toss people into black holes like Gitmo, just because POTUS says so? I don't know what you think about Trump, but do you seriously want a President Biden (or President Harris) to have that kind of power? Do you really imagine that is supposed to be some kind of improvement?

But that is not an appeal. There are no more appeals to be had on this case. SCOTUS is the end of the line. This particular case *has* been "settled." A decision has been made, and regardless of whether it is regarded as "precedent-setting," courts are typically quite reluctant to reverse themselves - especially SCOTUS, and especially especially when the decision for which reversal might be considered was made only a short time before. Of course this ruling will have an impact on that. Courts don't just ignore their own prior decisions as if they had never happened. Especially not on such a short time scale.

Still not seeing it. The system is not going to hold the system accountable. If, as you stated things earlier, "the justice system absolutely refuses to even arrest and charge them for anything regardless of the evidence," then by what means shall "Gitmo be used for politicians who violate the Constitution" ... ? If "the justice system absolutely refuses to even arrest and charge them for anything regardless of the evidence," then how does the following ever happen?

Yea, this ship already served her main purpose. There is a group here still worth sharing with though. Forum UI really is an old technology. Also requires following a conversation thread to get nuggets. Across the web, the shills have bigger budgets and the artificial echo chambers have grown larger. Comments attacking Ron are sickening. I believe Ron's underlying message of liberty and peace is still alive and popular to be honest. It's carried in a somewhat concealed fashion. I actually went on facebook today, even though they banned RPF, and there were some quality liberty/small govt/anti lockdown memes out there. Take care amigo.

I expect there will be plenty of shenanigans - oops, sorry, I mean *alleged* shenanigans - that may afford SCOTUS multiple opportunities to revisit this decision. But those won't come up until after the raging dumpster fire - oops, sorry, I mean *election* - by which time ACB should have been seated. Then we shall see what we shall see ... (getchyer popcorn ready ...)
