    I've never read or watched any of the Harry Potter stuff, but I've heard J.K. Rowling has occasionally kicked up some dust over this kind of thing. (Something to do with wizard poop in one case ...) As a minor but illustrative example, I'm reminded of the hissy fit a lot of people threw when Reagan's 1984 campaign used Springsteen's "Born in the USA" at campaign events. Reagan's campaign was accused of collectively being too stupid to understand the "true meaning" of the song and its lyrics. On the contrary, I've always thought that the person(s) responsible for choosing to use the song probably understood its "significance" (to the extent it had any) and appeal far better than any of the pissers and moaners did - and entirely regardless of any "authorial stance" Springsteen himself may have had.

    Yes, my thoughts as well, AF. But it seems that the article is intended to reach the "left" camp, and the first thought to my mind was it isn't left versus right, but liberty versus tyranny - we need everybody on board to fight this thing back.     August 6, 2020 There is growing concern that government surveillance in the United States is headed in a dangerous direction. Accelerated by publicity from the government’s heavy-handed response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, media outlets have reported on extensive aerial surveillance carried out by law enforcement agencies, increased police reliance on artificial intelligence (AI)-powered social media surveillance, and the use of facial recognition technology to detect individuals involved in suspected crimes. Some commentators even suggest that the surveillance techniques deployed in the United States are starting to resemble tactics used in far more repressive countries, such as China or Russia. David Carroll, for example, writes in Quartz that the main difference between U.S. and Chinese surveillance programs is that the Chinese are honest about the dystopian elements of their strategy, whereas the United States does a better job of “camouflaging it” and pretending that its surveillance programs still uphold civil liberties. Similarly, Derek Thompson compares two “surveillance states” in The Atlantic: Xinjiang, China and Brooklyn, New York. While he clarifies that nothing in the United States quite compares to the surveillance apparatus implemented by Chinese authorities, “the use of novel surveillance tools to monitor, terrify, and even oppress minority citizens is not a foreign concept.” Such comparisons can be highly misleading. Technological capacity alone is not determinative of whether a country will use surveillance repressively. As a democracy, the United States has many more rights protections in place than does China and fundamentally greater accountability between citizens and leaders. Nevertheless, as America’s history of past surveillance abuses indicates – such as the FBI and National Security Agency’s (NSA) actions in the 1960s and 1970s to spy on civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr – even well-established democracies struggle to maintain an appropriate balance between law enforcement imperatives, on the one hand, and citizens’ rights on the other. The rapid advent of powerful new digital technologies that enable greater mass surveillance raises the question of whether the United States will be able to maintain such a balance in the years ahead. Several troubling trends make that question especially pertinent now.

    August 8, 2020 By Chaz Donovan For the last several months, the populace of the United States of America has been beaten and bamboozled. Bewildered, if not outright crushed, people are berating each other for failing to wear a face mask in public. Riots have taken over several big cities in the country, and crime is exploding in New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and others. The country is walking on eggshells. Every new minute threatens to bring forth renewed hysteria, anger, and dysphoria. The tension and anger of the population at large are palpable. What happened here? It all started with Operation COVID. This writer thought that the lockdowns were unsustainable and that they would end quickly due to a furious response of the public. Surely, Americans would not put up with such nonsense. This is the purported “Land of the Free” after all. That they have accepted lockdowns shows this writer committed what should have been the obvious mortal sin of overestimating Boobus’ ability to think critically (or think at all). Not only have most Americans put up with it, they have begged for their chains. They have cheered the State in its effort to crush business owners, mandate masks, demand antisocial distancing (including on private property), and more. In some states, the lockdowns have not even ended. It should go without saying that the government has no authority to close business, nor force masks on people. With Boobus, this does not go without saying.

The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for a method of identity verification as an alternative to biometrics and physical credentials. This means a digital identity system, or what TSA calls a “digital services application,” which is likely to involve biometrics as a means of confirming the individual’s identity to the system (rather than directly to TSA).

Beware! Using a procedural trick, the US Senate late Sunday night unanimously added the Food Safety Bill back into the new Continuing budget resolution. It returns to the House in the exact text they sent it for consideration and a vote.

So says Jamie Dupree.

A major food safety bill that had almost been given up for dead was suddenly revived in the Senate late on Sunday evening, and may be ready for House approval as early as Tuesday.
