"Choose Huawei or else" — Denmark's tiny self-governing archipelago of the Faroe Islandshas reportedly been threatened by Beijing over plans for Chinese telecom giant Huawei's 5G roll out in the island autonomous region which lies halfway between Norway and Iceland. The major Danish national daily newspaper based in Copenhagen, Berlingske, broke the story based on a recording of China's ambassador to Denmark making a quid pro quo threat after the Faroe Islands promised 5G by 2020 to all of its citizens. The threat, involving dangling a free trade agreement before local officials, was reportedly caught on tape, but an ongoing legal battle has prevented its release. According to a rough English translation of the Berlingske exclusive: The Chinese ambassador to Denmark, Feng Tie, has directly threatened top people in the Faroese government to secure a strategically important contract for Chinese telecom giant Huawei. If the company did not get the contract, the Chinese government would drop a free trade agreement with the Faroe Islands. This is evidenced by a hitherto unreleased sound recording obtained by Berlingske. It is the first to reveal of how the Chinese government has linked access to the gigantic Chinese market along with Huawei's European contracts on 5G networks. Externally, Huawei emphasizes being a private company not associated with the Chinese state. The audio clip of the threat was reportedly blocked by court order soon before a Danish TV station was set to air it. It has not been made public.

Seventeen people, most of them teenage boys, have been arrested in Spain for sharing images of "extremely violent" child pornography on Whatsapp, police said Tuesday following a two-year investigation spanning three continents. The arrests came as part of a wide-ranging international probe led by Spain's national police, in which 33 people were detained in raids across 11 countries. As well as the 17 arrested in Spain, another nine were being held for investigation -- with a total of 14 teenage boys involved. In Spain, "most of those arrested" were minors, with the youngest just 15, police spokesman Eduardo Casas told AFP. In one case, a 29-year-old man was arrested for not only downloading child pornography but for encouraging other group members to make contact with young girls who could be exploited, particularly migrants who were unlikely to approach the police for help. A total of 20 people were arrested in Europe -- 17 in Spain, and three others in Italy, France and the United Kingdom. A further 10 were arrested in Latin America -- four in Ecuador, two in Uruguay, two in Peru and two in Costa Rica. Another three were picked up in India, Pakistan and Syria. A senior member of Britain's opposition Labour Party has dismissed the chances of the party winning power in Thursday's general election, speaking in a private conversation leaked to the Guido Fawkes news website. The Labour Party are trailing Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party in opinion polls ahead of the election which will decide the fate of Brexit and the ideology that underpins the world's fifth-largest economy. Labour's health spokesman Jon Ashworth said in the recordings that the situation in seats outside cities was "abysmal", blaming the party's Brexit policy and voters' perception of leader Jeremy Corbyn. "I just can't see it happening," Ashworth said, when asked how to prepare for Corbyn becoming prime minister. The recording appears to have been made before last week's visit by U.S. President Donald Trump. "Outside of the city seats, if you're in small-town Midlands and the North, it's abysmal out there. They don't like Johnson, but they can't stand Corbyn and they think Labour's blocked Brexit." More at: https://www.yahoo.com/news/labour-not-win-uk-election-113107744.html

A crowd gives a standing ovation after members of the Chesapeake City Council voted to designate Chesapeake as a "Second Amendment constitutional city" on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. (Kaitlin McKeown/Virginia Media) A line of around 1,200 people led from the steps of Chesapeake’s city hall, past the building and into a nearby parking lot. Bright orange “Guns SAVE Lives” stickers adorned the shirts of nearly every person standing in the line and three men stood in front of the building holding Gadsden flags printed with “Don’t Tread on Me.” Their efforts were rewarded when Chesapeake City Council members unanimously voted to designate the city as a “Second Amendment Constitutional City” — a symbol of support for protecting gun rights. The vote occurred just before 10:30 p.m Tuesday. Chesapeake is the first city in South Hampton Roads to take action on a resolution. After the approval, the crowd in the chamber gave the council a standing ovation and cheered, clapped and whistled. Mayor Rick West and Councilmen Robert Ike and Stephen Best were the only members who spoke before the vote and vowed to protect the citizens’ constitutional rights. Gun rights supporters have approached more than 50 cities and counties in Virginia, asking local governments to pass resolutions stating that public funds will not be used to limit gun rights allowed by the Second Amendment. Israeli legislators submitted a bill Tuesday that would dissolve parliament and trigger unprecedented third national elections in less than a year.Israel has been mired in political deadlock for months. With the two largest parties, Likud and Blue and White, unable to form a power-sharing agreement ahead of a Wednesday deadline, lawmakers from the rival sides together tabled the bill. It is expected to go to a vote in parliament on Wednesday, setting the date for the next election on March 2. “Under the exceptional circumstances that have emerged, and after two adjacent election campaigns in which no government was formed, the dissolution of the 22nd Knesset is being proposed,” the bill reads. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main rival Benny Gantz have been able to form a coalition government after two inconclusive elections. Polls have predicted the third vote is unlikely to produce dramatically different results. The legislation is something of a formality. The allotted period for forming a government following September's election expires at midnight on Wednesday. Without a coalition deal, elections would have been automatically triggered later in March. More at: https://news.yahoo.com/israeli-lawmakers-table-bill-dissolve-175123241.html

Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida announced Tuesday that he will not seek another term, saying he never meant to spend more than eight years in Congress. Yoho, who aligned himself with the Tea Party faction of the Republican Party and has been a fierce supporter of President Donald Trump, joins at least 27 House Republicans in announcing their departures from the U.S. House. Of those, 23 aren't seeking reelection, while three have resigned and already left Congress. And one — California Rep. Duncan Hunter — has said he is resigning and will leave the House shortly after the holidays. Yoho broke the news in a letter to supporters on Tuesday, reminding them that he had pledged to serve just four terms. “I truly believe a person's word is their bond and should live up to their word," he said. “I also meant that after eight years I would come home and pass the baton to a new generation.” Yoho defeated a longtime incumbent in the Republican primary in 2012 to win the Third District seat, representing Gainesville and a swath of northern Florida. At one time, he vied for the Speaker of the U.S. House at a time of disenchantment with former House Speaker John Boehner. More blackmail demands in the defense funding bill: The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate Armed Services Committees agreed on a compromise version of the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, after months of negotiations. It is expected to pass before Congress leaves Washington later this month for the year-end holiday break. The legislation includes $658.4 billion for the Department of Defense and Department of Energy national security programs, $71.5 billion to pay for ongoing foreign wars, known as "Overseas Contingency Operations" funding, and $5.3 billion in emergency funding for repairs of damage from extreme weather and natural disasters. It includes a 3.1% pay hike for the troops, the largest in a decade and, for the first time, 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal workers, something Democrats strongly sought. Among other things, the proposed fiscal 2020 NDAA imposes sanctions related to Russia's Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream pipelines and bars military-to-military cooperation with Russia.

Taiwan’s top diplomat said Tuesday that his government stands with Hong Kong citizens pushing for “freedom and democracy,” and would help those displaced from the semi-autonomous Chinese city if Beijing intervenes with greater force to quell the protests.Speaking to The Associated Press in Taipei, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu was careful to say his government has no desire to intervene in Hong Kong’s internal affairs, and that existing legislation is sufficient to deal with a relatively small number of Hong Kong students or others seeking to reside in Taiwan. But he added that Hong Kong police have responded with “disproportionate force” to the protests. He said that any intervention by mainland Chinese forces would be “a new level of violence” that would prompt Taiwan to take a different stance in helping those seeking to leave Hong Kong. “When that happens, Taiwan is going to work with the international community to provide necessary assistance to those who are displaced by the violence there,” he said. “The people here understand that how the Chinese government treats Hong Kong is going to be the future way of them treating Taiwan. And what turned out in Hong Kong is not very appealing to the Taiwanese people,” Wu said. China’s Communist Party insists that Taiwan is part of China and must be reunited with it, even if by force. Modern Taiwan was founded when Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists, who once ruled on the mainland, were forced to retreat to the island in 1949 after the Communists took power in the Chinese Civil War. Beijing has suggested that Taiwan could be reunited under the “one country, two systems” model that applied to Hong Kong after the former British colony was returned to China in 1997. That agreement allowed Hong Kong to keep its civil liberties, independent courts and capitalist system, though many in Hong Kong accuse Beijing of undermining those freedoms under President Xi Jinping. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has said that the “one country, two systems” model has failed in Hong Kong and brought the city to “the brink of disorder.” Government surveys earlier this year showed that about 80% of Taiwanese citizens oppose reunification with China.

Mexico's former top security chief has been indicted in New York City on charges he accepted a fortune in drug-money bribes from kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's notorious Sinaloa cartel to let it operate with impunity in Mexico.Genaro Garcia Luna, 51, was charged in federal court in Brooklyn with three counts of cocaine trafficking conspiracy and a false statements charge. Garcia Luna, a resident of Florida, was arrested Monday by federal agents in Dallas, where he made an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon. He waived his right to a hearing to establish his identity and will remain in custody while awaiting a bail hearing Dec. 17. Prosecutors in Brooklyn have said they will seek Garcia Luna’s removal to New York, where El Chapo faced trial in 2018. Jurors heard former cartel member Jesus Zambada testify that he personally made at least $6 million in hidden payments to Garcia Luna, on behalf of his older brother, cartel boss Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada. The cash was delivered during two meetings at a restaurant in Mexico between the start of 2005 and the end of 2007, he said. In a statement announcing the charges against Garcia Luna, U.S. Attorney Richard P. Donoghue accused the defendant of protecting the cartel “while he controlled Mexico’s federal police force and was responsible for ensuring public safety in Mexico." Prosecutors said other cooperating witnesses have confirmed that the cartel paid Garcia Luna tens of millions of dollars to clear the way for the Sinaloa cartel to safely ship multi-ton quantities of cocaine and other drugs into the United States. The cartel “obtained, among other things, safe passage for its drug shipments, sensitive law enforcement information about investigations into the cartel and information about rival drug cartels,” according to court papers.

op Republicans in the House are vowing to use every procedural tool available to them to strong-arm Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee and get them to hold a minority hearing on impeachment. In a letter led by House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), sent to Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday, the conservative members noted Republicans had previously requested a minority hearing be held before articles of impeachment were introduced. The group argued that while Democrats did not comply with their requested timeline, under current rules they are entitled to a hearing. “During the open hearing on December 4, 2019, Congressman Sensenbrenner , on behalf of all of the Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee, presented you with a request for a minority hearing in compliance with Clause 2(1)(1) of Rule XI. To date, you have ignored the request and failed to respond to repeated questioning on the matter,” they wrote. The lawmakers went on to allege the Democrats’ probe has been conducted at an “unprecedented speed,” adding that while they do not control the panel’s schedule, they feel the minority hearing should be held before the articles are voted on in the committee in coming days. “The House rules do not afford you the ability to deny this request. Though scheduling is left to your discretion, when considering the unprecedented speed at which the majority is moving towards impeaching a duly elected president, a delay under these circumstances is tantamount to a denial of our right to a minority hearing,” they continued. “Until our procedural rights as Members of the United States House of Representatives are respected, we will avail ourselves of every parliamentary tool available to us in committees and the House floor in order to highlight your inaction,” it reads. In addition to Biggs, 71 GOP lawmakers including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Minority Whip Steve Scalise (La.), GOP Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (Wyo,) signed onto the letter. “The Democrats haven't thrown out the rule book, they lit it on fire, and, you know, danced around it. There is no mechanism for us to be able to put on our case given Adam Schiff's veto of our witnesses and Jerry Nadler's rejection of our entitled evidentiary hearing,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told The Hill. “This would be like a criminal trial where the prosecution put on their case, and the defense wasn't allowed to admit evidence, unless the prosecution agreed to it.”

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro issued a decree on Tuesday that will allow tens of thousands of small farmer to finally gain title to the land they cultivate, making good on a campaign promise to the farm sector that backed his election. The land regularization measure, which goes into effect immediately but needs to be approved by Congress within 120 days, only applies to land that has been occupied by farmers before May 2014 and up to 2,500 hectares (6,178 acres) in size. Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina said the decree will allow small farmers to obtain credit that they were denied for lack of a title, and will generate more agricultural prosperity.
