While I'm all in favor of third parties this one doesn't excite me. https://www.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-former-republicans-democrats-form-223654665.html Exclusive-Former Republicans and Democrats form new third U.S. political party LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Dozens of former Republican and Democratic officials announced on Wednesday a new national political third party to appeal to millions of voters they say are dismayed with what they see as America's dysfunctional two-party system. The new party, called Forward and whose creation was first reported by Reuters, will initially be co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey. They hope the party will become a viable alternative to the Republican and Democratic parties that dominate U.S. politics, founding members told Reuters.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/23/who-declares-spreading-monkeypox-outbreak-a-global-health-emergency.html KEY POINTS: The WHO declared monkeypox a global health emergency. The rare designation means the WHO now views the outbreak as a significant enough threat to global health that a coordinated international response is needed. The WHO last issued a global health emergency in January 2020 in response to the Covid-19 outbreak.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/document-shows-uvalde-officials-sought-141506874.html HOUSTON — Days after the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, the leaders of the grieving city fumed during a closed-door meeting with Steven McCraw, the state’s top police official. They objected to McCraw’s public criticism of the response by city police officers to the May 24 massacre that killed 19 children and two teachers and, in a one-page document, laid out their own version of events, one that praised the officers for initially rushing to the gunfire and saving hundreds of other children in the school. The document prepared by Uvalde officials and labeled “narrative” was obtained by The New York Times after a public information request. Its account of events differed in significant aspects from the one described by McCraw’s agency, the Department of Public Safety, which is leading the police investigation into the shooting and the law enforcement response. The Uvalde officials pushed the document across the table to McCraw, asking him to publicly endorse it, according to a state police official who requested anonymity to describe the meeting on June 2. McCraw refused.

ffs, enough already. https://www.wsj.com/articles/high-tech-smell-sensors-scientists-develop-11657914274 But now scientists and entrepreneurs are redoubling their efforts to recreate the sense of smell in compact devices that detect and analyze odors similar to the way cameras now recognize our faces and microphones our words. In pursuit of these high-tech devices–which could use odors to detect disease like cancer or Covid-19, locate hidden explosives or decipher our moods and behaviors—some companies are leveraging advances in synthetic biology and genetic engineering. Others are harnessing advances in artificial intelligence.

FFS why not bring manufacturing and a lower tax rate here? This argument that well they do it, so should we is childish. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/yellen-says-u-aims-move-090934545.html NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) -The United States will look for every opportunity to move ahead and enact a global minimum corporate tax agreement despite the opposition of a key Democratic senator, Joe Manchin, to raising corporate taxes, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said. Yellen told reporters on Saturday that finance officials from the Group of 20 major economies reached strong consensus about many issues, including the need to address a worsening food security crisis, despite differences over Russia's war in Ukraine that prevented the leaders from issuing a joint statement. Manchin, who holds the pivotal vote in the evenly divided Senate, this week said he would not support a Democratic proposal for new climate change spending and higher taxes for corporations and wealthier Americans.

Plot twist. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/07/15/dems-dreaming-of-trump-pre-midterm-announcement-00045969 Democrats aren’t just eager for Donald Trump to cannonball into the 2024 presidential race before the fall midterms. Across the country, they are actively plotting ways to immediately capitalize on a pre-November announcement. Campaigns and officials at major Democratic outfits are planning to capture the anticipated cash windfall that would come their way should Trump announce he’s making another run at the White House. Candidates also are exploring ways to exploit Trump’s premature entry to energize despondent base voters and coalesce independents and suburb-dwellers who have soured on the party over stubbornly high inflation.

I bet he runs, tries to get the GOP nomination but fails as the GOP would consider him baggage. He then runs independent, and sucks votes away from the GOP and Biden gets re-elected. Trump then doesn't give a dam but rubs it in the GOP face for their lack of support in 2020. Turns out to be a big F-you.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/california-blocks-gun-sales-to-those-at-risk-of-breaking-law/ar-AAZuTbp?ocid=BingHp05&cvid=2628d7f8aec1444295caca7510823d08 SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gun makers and dealers in California will be required to block firearms sales to anyone they have “reasonable cause to believe is at substantial risk” of using a gun illegally or of harming themselves or others, under a new law that Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that he had signed. It's a subjective requirement that goes farther than current background checks or prohibitions on selling guns to people prohibited from owning them. The state's firearm industry standard of conduct, starting in July 2023, will require those making, importing or selling guns to “take reasonable precautions” to make sure the weapons don't fall into the wrong hands through sales or thefts. That includes having “reasonable controls” to prevent sales to arms traffickers, straw buyers, those prohibited from owning guns, and anyone deemed to be at “substantial risk” of using the gun improperly.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/donald-trump-2024-decision.html “Look,” Trump said, “I feel very confident that, if I decide to run, I’ll win.” I fixated on If I decide. Trump is less a politician than a live-action mythological creature, and so punditry and all of the standard forms of analyses tend to fail. What would factor into such a decision for such an unusual person? “Well, in my own mind, I’ve already made that decision, so nothing factors in anymore. In my own mind, I’ve already made that decision,” he said. He wouldn’t disclose what he’d decided. Not at first. But then he couldn’t help himself. “I would say my big decision will be whether I go before or after,” he said. “You understand what that means?” His tone was conspiratorial. Was he referring to the midterm elections? He repeated after me: “Midterms.” Suddenly, he relaxed, as though my speaking the word had somehow set it free for discussion. “Do I go before or after? That will be my big decision,” he said.

No, just no. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11010077/Chinese-courts-allow-AI-make-rulings-charge-people-carry-punishments.html Instead of merely collecting data, it means the AI is now making decisions on behalf of judges who must justify themselves if they want to overrule it. An AI prosecutor has even started charging people in Shanghai with crimes it believes they have committed, the South China Morning Post reports. And linking the AI up with China's social credit system means it can punish people who refuse to comply with judgements - such as blocking a person refusing to pay a fine from purchasing plane or train tickets.

https://news.yahoo.com/brazil-party-official-shot-dead-203000257.html SAO PAULO (Reuters) -A local official from Brazil's leftist opposition Workers' Party (PT) was shot dead on Saturday by a federal prison guard shouting support for right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, according to a state civil police report and a witness. Marcelo Arruda, a municipal guard and PT official, was celebrating his birthday party in the southern Brazilian city of Foz de Iguacu, in the state of Parana, when Jorge Jose da Rocha Guaranho entered the event and shot him dead. Arruda, who was also armed, shot back, killing Guaranho, according to a PT statement. The death of the two men augurs badly ahead of an October election that many expect to become highly fraught in politically polarized Brazil. Leftist former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is the PT's presidential candidate and currently leads Bolsonaro in polls.
