Japaj has a weird hybrid insurance / personal pay system. I talking to a guy who lived there when the transition happened, and he said that when people paid out of pocket, the price for a certain procedure was, say, $100. When the insurance system started, the deal was that the insurance would pay, say 80%, while the consumer paid 20%. Of course, the prices immediately rose so the out of pocket to the consumer ends up being the same $100 they originally paid, but now there's a payment to the insurer along with longer wait times. Such a deal.

booyah. "The US will now go after a so-called “Troika of Tyranny”: Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua" National Security Adviser John Bolton just gave a modern-day “Axis of Evil” speech, this one focused on three countries in Latin America. In a 30-minute address at Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower, Bolton said the Trump administration will take a hard line against Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua by sanctioning the countries and cutting off diplomatic relations with them until they meet US demands. “This Troika of Tyranny, this triangle of terror stretching from Havana to Caracas to Managua, is the cause of immense human suffering, the impetus of enormous regional instability, and the genesis of a sordid cradle of communism in the Western Hemisphere,” Bolton said. “Under President Trump, the United States is taking direct action against all three regimes to defend the rule of law, liberty, and basic human decency in our region.”

Oh, I have no doubt that the appeals court will issue a stay, and then we'll have to wait to see what SCOTUS does. But it looks like he was saying that the original SCOTUS decision was that the law wasn't permissible under the Interstate Commerce Clause, but it was permissible under the Congressional Tax Power. Since the tax is gone, the law is no longer Constitutional because it violates the ICC. We'll see. I've no faith left in the power of the Constitution to restrain government.

I would rather see the insurance companies forced out of routine care and back into catastrophic-coverage-only. Make people pay out of pocket and watch prices drop like a stone.

There's no stopping the Democrats. I wish there was a way to prevent them from taking over healthcare, but both sides now talk about having a plan, and neither side is saying "Let the states work it out." Barney Frank explained early on that Obamacare was merely a necessary steppingstone to Medicare for all.

TASS Press review: Russia to set up Caribbean base http://tass.com/pressreview/1035596 Moscow is gearing up to establish a long-term military presence in Latin America and the current mission of the Tu-160 strategic bombers to Venezuela is part of this plan, Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes. According to military envoys, Russian authorities have made a decision (and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro did not object) to deploy strategic aircraft to one of Venezuela’s islands in the Caribbean Sea, which has a naval base and a military airfield. Ten years ago, Russian experts and Armed Forces commanders had already visited the island of La Orchila, located 200 kilometers northeast of Caracas. Venezuelan laws prohibit the setup of military bases in the country, but a temporary deployment of warplanes is possible. "It is the right idea to include Venezuela in long-range aviation missions," military expert Colonel Shamil Gareyev told the newspaper, adding that it was also economically reasonable. "Our strategic bombers will not only not have to return to Russia every time, but also won't perform aerial refueling while on a patrol mission in the Americas. Our Tu-160 aircraft arrive to their base in Venezuela, conduct flights, execute their missions and are then replaced on a rotating basis. This is how it should be done," he said.

Yes, but that's a quote that gives me evidence I didn't have before. The Botox analogy is absolutely not good in any way shape of form because it's already considered a personal expense. The segue to "what about clothes and wristwatches!!!" just indicates that the person making the analogy knows nothing about campaign law, and therefore isn't a credible source for an opinion. Not my example. But that's pretty what exactly Trump did.

That ol' freedom lover John McCain tried to limit that, but SCOTUS nixxed it. A candidate can spend unlimited amounts of his/her own money on the campaign. Since you're geeky like me, note that McCain kept Senate filers from electronically filing. All filings had to go through the Senate first, via hard copy, then to the FEC As soon as he was in the ground, they finally changed the law so that Senate reports didn't have to be submitted via hard copy. But not before.

Nope. You can't use campaign funds to buy clothing unless we're talking about t-shirts for the staff and such. You can't buy food unless it's a dinner for a fundraiser or staff. You can't buy jewelry unless it's a gift to a non-family member. They have all been definitively addressed, both by statute and by precedent.
