Iraqi military forces on Tuesday retook two villages and an oil refinery on the outskirts of Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq, according to media reports. Iraq’s army reached Tal Afar’s center today, and forces are encircling terrorists in the last stronghold of ISIS in the Nineveh province. According to pro-government troops, quoted by Iraqi News, ISIS militants were setting oil wells on fire to prevent jets from striking targets in the area. A little over a month after recapturing Mosul, Iraq said that Iraqi forces, supported by the U.S., moved on to secure and retake Tal Afar, some 50 miles west of Mosul, from Islamic State militants. When somebody picks the rate instead of letting it happen naturally the odds that they get it right are almost non-existent. CC made a guess that is probably wrong as well but since he was just guessing and wants the market to decide it doesn't make much difference.

As tensions rise over North Korea, the U.S. Treasury this morning said it was slapping new sanctions on Chinese and Russian entities conducting oil, coal and banking business with Pyongyang, and propping up the country’s weapons program. The sanctions target 16 Chinese and Russian individuals and companies, with the bulk targeting Chinese entities which have been buying and selling oil and coal with North Korea, or offering related banking services to facilitate these transactions. “The Treasury will continue to increase pressure on North Korea by targeting those who support the advancement of nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and isolating them from the American financial system,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “It is unacceptable for individuals and companies in China, Russia, and elsewhere to enable North Korea to generate income used to develop weapons of mass destruction and destabilize the region,” he said. According to Politico, the sanctions target three Chinese companies believed to have imported some $500 million in North Korean coal and Russians who have been supplying Pyongyang with oil, among others. Sailors’ Bodies Found After Oil Tanker, Destroyer Crash Divers from the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps have found the remains of some of the 10 missing sailors from the USS John S McCain destroyer, which collided with an oil tanker on Sunday in the Singapore Strait. The divers were looking in the hull of the warship, which suffered damage from the collision to its port side, below the waterline, and several compartments were flooded, including a sleeping area for the crew. The Malaysian Navy, also involved in the search operation, may have located other remains, too, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Admiral Scott H. Swift, told media. He still needs votes, that is what he wants from us, that is why we get some good things out of him, THEY wanted Jeb Shrub or Hitlery, they still want somebody else, he needs to get enough votes to force himself on THEM, then he does some of what they want so he can stay alive and keep power as a "lesser of two evils" to THEM.

What is becoming obvious is that Dump pursues ALL options at once until one is more successful for HIS interests, this means we have a chance to get more out of him than any other President in living memory but it does not mean he is on our side, if he thinks it is to his advantage he will invade China or Russia.

We derive benefit from the 2nd amendment even though they don't follow it either, it helps to limit how much they abuse us. In the end what really matters is who is in office but a balanced budget amendment would still be a good thing.

I have never called for a reduction of travel to the US, I have called for reduced IMMIGRATION, not travel. We need to control how many foreigners stay here permanently and become citizens but we don't need to limit how many come here temporarily on business or for pleasure.

A federal appeals court Monday revived a lawsuit that seeks to block construction of a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan over concerns about its impact on the Okinawa dugong, an endangered marine mammal that resembles a manatee. The Center for Biological Diversity has authority to challenge the adequacy of the government's evaluation of the effect on the Okinawa dugong, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said. A three-judge panel of the court also said the environmental group's request for an injunction blocking the project did not raise political questions that were beyond judicial review. The ruling overturned a 2015 decision by U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco that dismissed the suit. The 9th Circuit sent the case back to Chen for further proceedings. The Department of Justice said in a statement it was reviewing the ruling. More at: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/appeals-court-revives-suit-us-military-base-japan-49344083 For once I hope the dugong huggers win, If only they could shut down ALL our overseas bases.

General William Mahone has not been forgotten entirely. Rather, he has been selectively remembered. There is a Mahone Monument, for example, erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy, at the Crater Battlefield in Petersburg, and Civil War scholars have treated Mahone’s military career with respect. There is an able biography. The problems posed by William Mahone for many Virginians in the past — and what makes it worthwhile for us to think about him in the present — lie in his postwar career. Senator William Mahone was one of the most maligned political leaders in post-Civil War America. He was also one of the most capable. Compared to the Roman traitor Cataline (by Virginia Democrats), to Moses (by African American congressman John Mercer Langston), and to Napoleon (by himself), Mahone organized and led the most successful interracial political alliance in the post-emancipation South. Mahone’s Readjuster Party, an independent coalition of black and white Republicans and white Democrats that was named for its policy of downwardly “readjusting” Virginia’s state debt, governed the state from 1879 to 1883. During this period, a Readjuster governor occupied the statehouse, two Readjusters represented Virginia in the United States Senate, and Readjusters represented six of Virginia’s ten congressional districts. Under Mahone’s leadership, his coalition controlled the state legislature and the courts, and held and distributed the state’s many coveted federal offices. A black-majority party, the Readjusters legitimated and promoted African American citizenship and political power by supporting black suffrage, office-holding, and jury service. To a degree previously unseen in Virginia, and unmatched anywhere else in the nineteenth-century South, the Readjusters became an institutional force for the protection and advancement of black rights and interests. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-confederate-general-who-was-erased-from-history_us_599b3747e4b06a788a2af43e I don't trust HuufPo but I am always interested in learning.

A petition calling for the White House to officially brand the Antifa movement as a terrorist organization has reached the threshold of signatures necessary to compel the Trump administration to reply, according to the Washington Times. The petition received its 100,000th signature around 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday. Though it had 30 days to reach that goal, the petition did so in less than a week. The petition contends that Antifa deserves the terrorist designation because of its “violent actions” in cities like Berkeley, Calif, and Charlottesville, Va., as well as its “influence” in the killings of police officers. The full text of the petition is below: “Terrorism is defined as “the use of violence and intimidation in pursuit of political aims”. This definition is the same definition used to declare ISIS and other groups, as terrorist organizations. AntiFa has earned this title due to its violent actions in multiple cities and their influence in the killings of multiple police officers throughout the United States. It is time for the pentagon to be consistent in its actions – and just as they rightfully declared ISIS a terror group, they must declare AntiFa a terror group – on the grounds of principle, integrity, morality, and safety.” If the petition is successful, Antifa would differ from other terror groups in one unique respect: Antifa isn’t an organization, so much as a blanket term for far-left protesters known for their violent battles with right-wing groups, as the Washington Times explains.
