About 50 miles of brand new wall has been completed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) along the United States’ southwest border, with more expected to be constructed, according to acting Commissioner Mark Morgan. “Fifty miles of new border wall on the Southwest border and construction continues every day,” Morgan announced in a July 10 Twitter post. “Construction is underway for more than 50 additional miles and more contract awards are anticipated by the end of the year.” Accompanying Morgan’s Twitter post were a few photos, some showing the construction process—others depicting the finished product. It didn’t say exactly where the new wall was being built. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said last month that each week, about two miles of additional border wall are being built. “ coming along aggressively,” McAleenan told Trump during a meeting at the White House on June 12. “By the end of next year, over 400 miles .” More at: https://www.theepochtimes.com/cbp-co...y_2998480.html

To constrain the growth of central government, conservatives have fought to keep down the number of federal bureaucrats. This strategy has failed. Since the 1960s, the number of federal employees has remained constant at about 2 million, yet federal power has greatly expanded. This phenomenon arises because Washington has outsourced many civil service functions to contractors, nonprofit groups, and lower levels of government. According to New York University professor Paul Light, the true size of the federal government’s “blended workforce” is now somewhere between 7 million and 9 million people. The biggest portion of the blended federal workforce consists of federal contractors. Today, there are about 3.7 million federal contractors—almost twice as many as there were in the 1960s.

Call it the Case of the Vanishing Trump Administration Officials. That was the mystery that played out at the 2019 Aspen Security Forum, where senior officials, thought leaders and reporters gather annually in one of America’s wealthiest ski and sun playgrounds to debate timely matters of national security and foreign policy. The event was established a decade ago to bring Republicans and Democrats together for robust, bipartisan discussions. But this year’s gathering was marked chiefly by the absence of any of President Donald Trump’s top officials. More at: https://news.yahoo.com/where-trump-officials-aspen-forum-175226479.html

Alcohol tainted with potentially toxic levels of methanol has killed 19 people in Costa Rica, where authorities issued an alert against drinking some half-dozen brands. The Ministry of Health issued the national warning Friday while also updating the death toll. Of 34 people who have been poisoned, 14 men and five women, age 32 to 72, have died since the first week of June, the ministry said. Authorities warned that it was not known how much alcohol had been adulterated, but have confiscated some 30,000 bottles and are carrying out a countrywide investigation. The doctored alcohol contained between 30 to 50 percent methanol, according to Donald Corella, head of emergency services at Calderon Guardia Hospital in San Jose, who was quoted in the daily La Nacion. U.S. national security adviser John Bolton departed on Saturday for a trip to Japan and South Korea as the two countries are in the middle of a trade dispute.A White House National Security Council spokesman said on Twitter that Bolton planned to "continue conversations with critical allies and friends." Bolton will visit South Korea from July 23 to July 24, South Korea's presidential office spokeswoman Ko Min-jung said on Sunday. He will meet South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong on Wednesday to discuss a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and strengthen alliance between Seoul and Washington. During his trip, Bolton is also likely to seek support for a U.S. initiative to heighten surveillance of vital Middle East shipping lanes, which has been greeted warily by allies reluctant to raise tensions with Iran, which Washington blames for attacks on tankers. Japanese media has said the issue could be on the agenda when Bolton visits Japan, where any military commitment abroad would risk inflaming a divide in public opinion in a country whose armed forces have not fought overseas since World War Two. A South Korean official said last week Washington had yet to make any official request to Seoul on the issue. Japan is the world's fourth-biggest oil buyer and 86% of its oil supplies last year passed through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.

North Korea's state media has slammed Japan for its recent trade restrictions against Seoul over wartime slavery disputes, accusing Tokyo of "destroying the trend of peace" on the Korean peninsula. After South Korea's high court ordered Japanese firms that used forced labour to compensate Korean victims, Tokyo earlier this month restricted the export of several chemicals to South Korea that are crucial to its world-leading chip and smartphone companies. South Korea's left-leaning President Moon Jae-in, who favours engagement with Pyongyang, has said Tokyo's actions are "politically motivated" and have caused an "unprecedented emergency" for Seoul's export-driven economy. North Korea has repeatedly warned the South to stop "meddling" in nuclear talks between Pyongyang and Washington, but sided with Seoul for its trade row with Tokyo. Japan is one of the most hawkish of the major powers on the nuclear-armed North -- whose leader Kim Jong Un agreed to a resumption of dialogue with Tokyo and Seoul's major ally the US last month -- and has received some of Pyongyang's harshest rhetoric. Japan is "trying to destroy the trend of peace on the Korean Peninsula by putting pressure upon South Korea through the restrictions", reported the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday night, describing Japan as its "sworn enemy". It added: "The human, physical and emotional damage Japan has caused to the Korean people (during its colonial rule) cannot be compensated even if the entire nation of Japan sacrifices itself." Pyongyang's remarks came as a top South Korean official said "all options" were open on the fate of a military intelligence-sharing agreement known as GSOMIA -- a pact that enables Seoul and Tokyo to share intelligence regarding North Korea -- if Japan does not withdraw its trade restrictions. Tensions escalated Friday as a South Korean man in his 70s died after setting himself on fire outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul, and Japanese foreign minister summoned the South Korean ambassador in Tokyo over the dispute.

In fact, a poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of C-SPAN in June 2019 revealed that 6% of Americans believe the moon landing was staged — and even more respondents,15%, said they don’t know if it was real or fake. In the running for most famous of the deniers might be Bart Sibrel, a 55-year-old Tennessee resident notorious for having been punched in the face by Buzz Aldrin in 2002 after Sibrel confronted Aldrin in person, calling him a liar, coward and thief, Aldrin was not prosecuted as police determined he'd been provoked, and that punch earned him accolades from many fed up with the conspirators. "I went from being the biggest fan of the 'moon missions' to being their biggest critic," said Sibrel in emails to FLORIDA TODAY in early July. Stating the moon landing was a "Cold War CIA and Nixon administration deception," Sibrel said he has a compilation of "riveting" and "compelling" evidence that reveals the entire space program to be a hoax. Sibrel said his evidence consists of "recordings, photographic analysis, and high profile interviews with those involved in the space program." "Not a single critic has ever explained, in this federal government's alleged picture from the moon, how two shadows in sunlight, from objects five feet apart from one another, can intersect at 90 degrees," Sibrel wrote. "Go outside yourself and see if this can take place in sunlight. It is completely impossible." Sibrel, like many other moon landing conspiracy theorists, is referencinga picture in which an astronaut is seen taking a moon stroll. The deniers say no way can the astronaut's shadow not be parallel to the moon rocks.

Swordsmyth replied to a thread Mexico. in World News & Affairs
Mexico City’s government has been under attack by critics who say violence has spun out of control since a new, left-leaning administration took over in late 2018.Run by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum since December, the city now says that the previous administration extensively under-reported crime. As a result, while it appears that the crime rate has shot up in 2019 under new leadership, by some measures it’s actually fallen. Reviews of tens of thousands of criminal files from 2018 show the city’s homicides haven’t risen this year by more than a third, as previously reported, but by only about 12%, said Ernestina Godoy, Mexico City’s chief prosecutor. Violent crimes as a whole have dropped by 8% this year, she said. The new figures, which will be released as part of official federal data on Saturday, are bound to raise questions about how trustworthy any government’s crime statistics are in Mexico. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador won election in a landslide a year ago on promises to crack down on rampant corruption and violence. Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s first elected female mayor, is a member of his party and a close ally. Registry ‘Distorted’ Godoy says United Nations officials oversaw the process of reclassifying the criminal cases. “The registry was distorted,” Godoy said in an interview at her office. “In cases of rape they were classified as sexual harassment or abuse, or just injuries.” Out of 214,000 files reviewed from 2018, more than 24,000 so-called “high-impact” criminal cases had been doctored, she said. Rape last year had actually been double the number reported by the administration of Miguel Angel Mancera, mayor since 2012. Iraqi Kurdish authorities announced Saturday they had arrested two suspects involved in the murder of three people, including a Turkish diplomat, in the regional capital Arbil this week. The autonomous region's security council first said its counterterrorism unit had arrested "the main perpetrator" Mazloum Dag, a 27-year-old from Turkey's Diyarbakir region. The council had put out a wanted notice for Dag a day earlier in connection to Wednesday's killing of Turkish Vice Consul Osman Kose and two Iraqi nationals. It later announced it had also arrested Mohammad Biskesiz, identifying him as "one of the accomplices of Mazloum Dag". It did not specify Biskesiz's nationality or whether he was apprehended with Dag or separately. Turkey's Anadolu state news agency said Dag is the brother of Dersim Dag, a member of Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party, the People's Democratic Party (HDP). The HDP, the country's second largest opposition group, is regularly accused by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of links to Turkey's outlawed separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The HDP "strongly" condemned the Arbil attack, calling it an "absolutely unacceptable provocation attempt". It also slammed the accusation that one of its deputies was "designated as a target because of his brother", without mentioning any names. Panama's maritime authority said on Saturday it had begun the process of withdrawing the registration of an oil tanker called MT Riah, which was towed to Iran after it disappeared from ship tracking maps in the Strait of Hormuz on July 14.Panama began the flag withdrawal process on Friday after an investigation determined the tanker had "deliberately violated international regulations" by not reporting any unusual situation, the authority said in a statement. "We roundly condemn the use of Panamanian flagged ships for illicit activities," the authority said in a statement. Panama, which has the largest shipping fleet in the world, has recently withdrawn flags from dozens of vessels, some of which were operated by Iran. It is not clear which country or company owns and operates the Riah. More at: https://news.yahoo.com/1-panama-says-withdrawing-flag-015608721.html

The number of people infected with Ebola continues to rise steadily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC's) outbreak zone, according to reports yesterday and today, with one more healthcare worker sickened by the virus and the outbreak total rising to 2,546 cases. New health worker infectionOf 10 new cases reported in the health ministry's update yesterday, 4 were in Beni, a former Ebola epicenter that has become a hot spot again. The others were in Butembo (2), Mandima (2), Vuhovi (1), and Mutwanga (1). Outbreak responders are still investigating 402 suspected cases. One of the new illnesses involves a vaccinated health worker from Mandima. So far, 137 healthcare workers have been infected in the outbreak, 41 of them fatally. Today the World Health Organization (WHO) online Ebola dashboard reflects 14 more cases, which would push the outbreak total to 2,546. Seven more people died from their Ebola infections, the DRC health ministry said yesterday, including four in community settings in Beni, Mandima, and Vuhovi—a factor that raises the risk of further transmission. The death total has now passed 1,700, with 1,705 confirmed fatalities, the DRC health ministry said yesterday. Stepped up surveillance in GomaIn its report yesterday, the ministry said the entry point monitoring team at Goma International Airport will now operate 24 hours a day to identify contacts of confirmed cases traveling through the area. Oly Ilunga Kalenga, MD, the DRC's health minister, was in Goma yesterday to meet with response teams following the detection earlier this week of the provincial capital's first case, a pastor arriving from Butembo who died from his infection. Kalenga visited the checkpoint in Nyragongo where the pastor had traveled through, as well as a new 60-bed Ebola treatment center being built by Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Do leftists want to MADA, Make America Dirty Again? A clue is provided by some of the cities they run, dotted as they are with human feces. Now there’s a related clue, too: Some leftists would make toilet paper the next plastic straw (which itself was the next SUV) and start a war on it. Just consider this Kimberly Strassel tweet, brought to us by American Thinker’s Monica Showalter: And now they are coming for your toilet paper..... To be clear, folks, there is NOTHING the left would not seek to control in people's daily lives under the guise of fixing "climate change." They will even tell you with what to wipe. https://t.co/GGcXoMa0PM — Kimberley Strassel (@KimStrassel) July 18, 2019 Showalter remarks that leftists want to make us like socialist Venezuela, where, aside from being reduced to eating cats and dogs, people find toilet paper in short supply. She also quotes the NRDC (National Resources Defense Council) itself: You may not realize it, but the toilet paper in your bathroom likely comes from some of the most important — and threatened — forests in the world. In fact, Procter & Gamble is driving the devastation of one of the last great forests on earth to produce Charmin, the world’s biggest toilet paper brand — made out of 100 percent virgin forest fiber. Now we’re running out of time: Between 1996 and 2015, more than 28 million acres of Canada’s boreal forest were logged. This logging threatens the ways of life of hundreds of Indigenous communities, releases hundreds of millions of tons of climate-altering carbon stored in the forest into the atmosphere every year, and devastates iconic wildlife. Procter & Gamble must own up to its environmental impact and stop making its toilet paper from virgin pulp rather than sustainable recycled materials. The cost to communities, species, and our climate is simply too high to keep flushing our forests away. Showalter wonders why the NRDC is targeting Charmin, stating that those buying it actually use less paper because it’s so absorbent; she asserts that some leftists have actually advocated it for this reason.

Tech giant Google has blacklisted the free-speech focused social media app Gab from the Google Play Store, joining Apple in banning Gab users from accessing the platform using Gab-branded smartphone apps. Silicon Valley tech giant Google has reportedly banned the free-speech focused social media platform Gab from the Google Play Store. According to a screenshot posted by Gab to Twitter, Google banned the app from the store for “Violation of User Generated Content (UGC) Policy.” Essentially, it appears that Gabs refusal to censor users’ content is what resulted in the app being removed from the store. The tweet posted by Gab can be seen below, along with a number of links to similar apps that are still active in the Play Store and work with Gab’s servers. Because Gab shifted its platform to a decentralized and open-source architecture, it can be accessed by other apps still available on both Android and Apple smartphones, some with nearly identical code to the blacklisted Gab app. Google just banned the Gab app. You can get the exact same app, which works with our server, here: https://t.co/Af91xXhZht Or here: https://t.co/EzG1jCJCx6 Google's playing checkers. EMMANUEL MACRON's attempts to build an ever closer European Union with a common EU army could fail due to concerns France has sparked among smaller countries, security expert Alexandre Vautravers has said. Emmanuel Macron has been one of the most outspoken proponents of a European Union-wide army to help the bloc stop relying on military support from the United States. But security expert Alexandre Vautravers has warned the French president his eagerness could actually backfire as smaller EU countries are growing "concerned" about the implications of such a project. Speaking to France 24, Mr Vautravers said: "European countries, perhaps some of the smaller countries, are concerned with the fact that France – which has been an extremely interventionist country throughout the world – would be placed essentially at the helm of such a foreign policy of defence and security. "There are many neutral countries within the European Union – how would this affect their constitution? Another problematic is nuclear weapons." At least five countries in the EU – namely Austria, Malta, Ireland, Finland and Sweden – have repeatedly claimed they remain "militarily non-aligned" despite Brussels increasing efforts to establish a common military response force. Mr Vautravers continued: "The previous initiative by President Macron has been to tie, link closer, the French with the German seat at the UN Security Council, or having the possibility to share it, and this was linked to the possibility of sharing strategic forces which means nuclear deterrence capabilities that are in the hands of France. "That would technically constitute a violation of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty."
