Apple has begun giving secret “trust scores” to users based on how they use their devices. The firm said that it has begun tracking the number of phone calls and emails sent and received from iPhones and Apple TVs to create a measure of trustworthiness. The scores could help Apple tackle fraud by tracking fake reviews and spam App Store accounts. However, Apple has refused to reveal the exact reasons why it is collecting the data. Apple’s new policy was shown in the legal agreement for its iOS 12 software update, which was released on Monday. The agreement reads: “To help identify and prevent fraud, information about how you use your device, including the approximate number of phone calls or emails you send and receive, will be used to compute a device trust score when you attempt a purchase.” More at: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-gives-users-secret-apos-110955423.html

Germany's government will seek permanent membership in the Three Seas Initiative (TSI), the country's foreign minister, Heiko Maas, said at the group's meeting in Bucharest on Sept. 18, EU Observer reported. Membership in the TSI would facilitate Germany's cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries. But such cooperation could be difficult as Germany has ongoing disputes over the rule of law with several countries in the TSI, including Hungary, Poland and Romania. In addition, many countries in the group have criticized the proposed Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Germany and Russia. Democrat politicians clearly count on a strong amount of support among Hispanic voters — those whose ancestry is from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central and South America, Cuba — to forge a winning coalition in American elections. They were extremely disappointed when Donald Trump garnered 35 percent of the Hispanic vote in Florida in the 2016 presidential election, critical in his capturing the Sunshine State over Hillary Clinton. And, not only that, Trump did better nationally among Hispanics than Mitt Romney had done in 2012 (with 27 percent nationally) and much better than Bob Dole did in 1996, with a dismal 21 percent. New statistics released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau are therefore not only great news for Hispanics in the United States, but are also potentially troubling news for Democratic Party election hopes. According to Census Bureau data, the median income for Hispanics grew by 3.7 percent, adjusted for inflation, last year. That is more than double the increase enjoyed by all households in the booming U.S. economy.

Democrats fear the congressional campaign of Donna Shalala, the Democratic candidate for Florida's 27th Congressional District, may be in "sleep mode" and falling behind her Republican opponent's campaign. Local Democrats in Florida are worried Shalala is struggling to hold on against Maria Elvira Salazar, a popular former newswoman who worked for Spanish-language networks like Univision and Telemundo, Politico reports. Internal polls from both campaigns, obtained by Politico, show Salazar is either ahead or just narrowly trailing the Florida Democrat. Salazar has a lead over Shalala, the former head of the Clinton Foundation, by 7 percentage points in a poll conducted by the Republican campaign. The Democratic campaign also conducted a poll, completed Sept. 1, which concluded Salazar was down by 4 percentage points. Gun rights advocates announced on Monday night that they expanded their suit over whether gun schematics can be published on the internet to include representatives from new states. The Second Amendment Foundation, in cooperation with 3D-printed gun pioneer Cody Wilson's company Defense Distributed, added New York governor Andrew Cuomo, Pennsylvania governor Thomas Wolf, Delaware attorney general Matthew Denn, and Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro to their suit. They accuse the defendants of "unconstitutional prior restraint" for their efforts to block the publishing of gun files, including those with instructions for printing gun components on 3D-printers, despite the State Department settling with the plaintiffs to allow their publication earlier this summer. "Under the color of state law, the Defendants are denying us our civil and constitutional rights by waging a coordinated and politically fueled campaign to censor Defense Distributed," Alan Gottlieb, executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, said in a statement. "What these public officials are attempting is an unconstitutional exercise of prior restraint. They are trying to prevent Defense Distributed and its founder, Cody Wilson, from exercising free speech." The suit accuses the government officials of abridging Wilson's First Amendment rights, Second Amendment rights, due process rights, and equal protection rights as well as violating the Commerce Clause and attempting to supersede federal laws. Their brief said government officials are specifically targeting Wilson's company because they don't like his message. "Under the color of state law, the Defendants are waging a coordinated and politically fueled campaign to censor Defense Distributed—and only Defense Distributed," the brief said. "They do so despite the fact that federal law expressly authorized Defense Distributed to publish the files at issue on the internet; and they do so despite the fact that countless other members of the public freely engage in the same or similar speech. The Defendants censor Defense Distributed because they dislike speech favoring the Second Amendment and because they dislike this particular speaker." Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Wednesday unloaded a torrent of criticism on Sen. Dianne Feinstein for her handling of the sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, telling the ranking Democrat on the committee, "I cannot overstate how disappointed I am." Saying Feinstein "chose to sit on the allegations until a politically opportune moment," Grassley demanded she immediately turn over an unredacted copy of the letter from Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, that Feinstein received July 30. Feinstein, D-Calif., shared the letter with federal authorities and other senators only last week, days before a key Judiciary Committee vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, after a leak about the letter was published in The Intercept. Republicans have accused Democrats of orchestrating that leak. Grassley, R-Iowa, who called the document a "significant piece of evidence in Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation process," said that despite multiple requests, he still has access only to a redacted copy of the letter included in supplemental background materials provided by the FBI to a select group of senators. He asserted that he needs the full version of the document in order to "prepare for Monday's hearings" into the allegations against Kavanaugh. Meanwhile, Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted Wednesday night that she would not vote for Kavanaugh. In her message, she explicitly wrote that his legal rulings and ideology, and not the allegations by Ford, were the reason for her decision. McCaskill is locked in a tight re-election race in a red state that Trump won handily in 2016. A new poll shows a Republican candidate in a highly contested swing district in California is leading by 10 points over her Democratic opponent -- who was endorsed by former President Barack Obama but whose candidacy was plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct. Young Kim, a former representative in the California State Assembly, is leading Democrat Gil Cisneros among likely voters in California’s 39th Congressional District, according to a Monmouth University poll released Tuesday. The support among the candidates is divided mostly along racial lines, with most Hispanic voters supporting Cisneros, who made his riches in lottery winnings, while Asian voters and non-Hispanic white voters are supporting Kim. Both Kim and Cisneros aren’t well recognized by the voters, but the Republican enjoys a positive 32-11 favorability rating, while Cisneros is viewed unfavorably by 24 percent of surveyed voters and only 23 percent have a favorable view of him. The district has been leaning toward the Republicans for years, electing Rep. Ed Royce by 14 points, though Hillary Clinton won the district by eight points in 2016. The Democrats have targeted the seat in their “red to blue” program, providing organizational and financial support in a bid to flip the seat in the upcoming midterm elections. The Cisneros campaign benefited from Obama’s rare campaign visit in California – even though the former president didn’t initially endorse Cisneros – where he stumped for him and other Democratic candidates who are running in Republican districts. But despite the support, the Democrat is struggling to make strides in the polls, with some pointing to the accusations of sexual misconduct that were weaponized by Republicans.

As a Japanese military recruiter sat patiently at a booth outside a supermarket in northern Tokyo one recent weekend, she welcomed a rare visitor, high school student Kazuaki Matsumura. But Matsumura, who plans to go to university, wasn’t there to sign up. He was just curious. “There are scenes in the media that spark interest in the Self-Defence Forces,” the 16-year-old said, referring to Japan’s military. “But there are also scenes showing how tough it is and I don’t think many want to join. They want to do other things.” Empty recruiting tables and disinterested audiences are becoming more common for the SDF as Japan’s demographic troubles and robust economy have created what some defense insiders call a “silent crisis” for military recruiting. Amid a rock-bottom birth rate, the number of Japanese age 18 to 26 - the core of the recruitment pool - has shrunk to 11 million from 17 million in 1994. That group is forecast to shrink to 7.8 million over the next 30 years. That has left the SDF unable to hit recruitment quotas since 2014. Overall, the military was only able to recruit about 77 percent of the 9,734 lowest-rank enlisted personnel it had sought in the year ending in March. “Twenty years from now, unless we can replace a considerable number of people with robots, it’ll be hard to maintain the current level of war capability,” said Akihisa Nagashima, a former parliamentary vice defense minister and conservative independent lawmaker. “Japan’s (security) situation won’t be more peaceful, so I think this is really serious.” The personnel crunch could force Japan’s military into tough choices about future missions as it tries to contain China’s maritime expansion and deal with volatility on the Korean peninsula. “The manpower shortage will affect operational efficiency,” said Hideshi Tokuchi, a former vice defense minister who once headed the ministry’s personnel bureau. “It is a headache. There is more to do with fewer people and I don’t think there is any easy solution.”

The United States said it was ready to resume talks with North Korea after Pyongyang pledged on Wednesday to dismantle its key missile facilities and suggested it would close its main Yongbyon nuclear complex if Washington took unspecified actions. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had invited North Korea’s foreign minister to meet in New York next week, with the aim of completing its denuclearization by January 2021, after a Pyongyang summit between the leaders of the two Koreas. In addition to inviting North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho to meet when both are in New York next week for the annual U.N. General Assembly gathering of world leaders, Pompeo said Washington invited Pyongyang’s representatives to meet the U.S. special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, in Vienna at the “earliest opportunity.” South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, said the reciprocal U.S. steps could include an end-of-war declaration. South Korea and the United States remain technically at war with North Korea because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice and not a peace treaty. Despite the doubts of U.S. officials and outside analysts, North Korea’s pledge at the summit with the South Korean president drew an enthusiastic response from Trump. Speaking before Pompeo’s comments, Trump‏ welcomed Kim’s pledges, calling them part of “tremendous progress” with Pyongyang on a number of fronts, and hailing “very good news” from the summit between the Koreas.

Colorado Republican Rep. Mike Coffman had already decided to lead opposition in the U.S. House to President Donald Trump’s “Space Force” proposal. But a widely leaked Air Force estimate that creating a space force as a new military service would cost $13 billion over the first five years only stiffened Coffman’s resolve. Coffman, who chairs the House Armed Services Committee’s Military Personnel Subcommittee and sits on its Strategic Forces Subcommittee, was sure other lawmakers agree with him. “A really bad idea is a ‘Department of Space,’” Coffman said in an interview Tuesday, adding, “I feel confident we can block this. The president will not have the votes.” Clouding things further, the overall price tag may not be realistic, according to Todd Harrison, a space expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “This estimate is way too high. It’s as if the Air Force is trying to sabotage the idea by making it seem much broader and more expensive than it really would be,” Harrison said, who added that part of the $13 billion is actually earmarked for U.S. Space Command.

The UK’s Brexit stance on the Irish border and future trade with the European Union are unacceptable, EU president Donald Tusk said on Wednesday. Tusk’s comments come ahead of the EU summit in Salzburg, Austria, where he advocated close coordination on security and foreign policy issues, but warned that Britain’s Chequers proposals and “other issues such as the Irish question, or the framework for economic cooperation, the UK’s proposals will need to be reworked.” “The Brexit negotiations are entering their decisive phase,” Tusk said at a news conference. “Various scenarios are still possible today but I’d like to stress that some of Prime Minister May’s proposals from Chequers indicated positive evolution in the UK’s approach.” Tusk is expected to chair the 28-member summit later on Wednesday, mentioning that he would call an extra summit for EU leaders in mid-November to finalize Brexit negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response seemed timid and was at odds with statements from his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and more recent statements from Russia’s Foreign Ministry. Putin backed off on explicitly blaming Israel for the downing of the IL-20 ELINT aircraft which killed 15 Russian servicemen, but made it clear he holds them responsible for the attack as a whole. My thoughts on what the goals of the attack were are the focus of my latest article at Strategic Culture Foundation. It was obvious to me that this attack was designed as a provocation to start World War III in Syria and blame the Russians for attacking a NATO member without proper cause, since the Syrian air defense forces were the ones responsible for shooting down the plane. Lying us into war is a time-honored American political tradition, whether we’re talking Fort Sumter, Pearl Harbor or the Gulf of Tonkin. All of these incidents were avoidable by Presidents intent on getting into a conflict while simultaneously playing the victim card by getting the other side to shoot first. I’m sorry if that is a controversial statement but the historical record on them is very, very clear. From Strategic Culture: The setup is pretty clear. Israel and France coordinated an attack on multiple targets within Syria without US involvement but with absolute US knowledge of the operation to provoke Russia into going off half-cocked by attacking the inconsequential French frigate which assisted Israel’s air attack. Any denunciation of sinister intent by Israeli Defense Forces is hollow because if they had not intended to provoke a wider conflict they would have given Russia more than one minute to clear their planes from the area. That would constitute an attack on a NATO member state and require a response from NATO, thereby getting the exact escalation needed to continue the war in Syria indefinitely and touch off WWIII.

From Daniel Friedman, Citizen.co.za, "White existence is a crime, says BLF spokesperson": The BLF spokesperson has posted views reflecting his party's belief that all white people in South Africa are criminals by virtue of their existence. Black First, Land First spokesperson Lindsay Maasdorp has told the author of this article and others about the controversial party that my "existence is a crime." He also repeated his party's slogan, "land or death." Maasdorp’s assertion that, as a white person, “my existence is a crime,” provides some insight into the party’s apparent belief that, due to the theft of land by white people during colonisation and apartheid, all white South Africans are therefore criminals, regardless of when they were born and what their political views, history or affiliations may be. At the recent land hearings held in parliament, Mngxitama called for section 25 of the Constitution to be scrapped entirely to ensure that all land owned by white people is returned to their black counterparts. The BLF leader said this section should be replaced with a declaration that all land owned by white people in South Africa was stolen property. Mngxitama has repeatedly made the assertion that absolutely all land occupied by white South Africans should be expropriated. This makes the party the most extreme in South Africa when it comes to the land issue and in its attitude to white people in general. They have been accused of hate speech by the South African Human Rights Commision, who have recommended that the party be prevented from contesting the 2019 elections on the grounds that they have made statements violating the Electoral Act.

As the flooding from Hurricane Florence dissipates, North Carolina residents could face significant public-health and environmental crisis after at least 17 animal waste pits, coal ash facilities, and human sewage plants across the state released millions of gallons of toxic liquid into nearby communities. On an aerial tour Monday of pig country, housing the nation's largest hog producing counties, many anaerobic lagoons or manure lagoons, a human-made outdoor earthen basin filled with animal waste, survived the devastating hurricane, but some were badly damaged with breaches flowing into local water systems, said Bloomberg. “We don’t think it’s a good idea for people to be swimming around in poop,” said John Rumpler, clean water program director for Environment America, a Colorado-based advocacy group. “It’s a pretty serious public-health risk that people should be concerned about.” Five days after Hurricane Florence made landfall, much of North Carolina's low-lying eastern region remains flooded and effectively shut down. Pig operations map overlaid on National Weather Service Flash Flood warnings seems to indicate (courtesy tool from @MappingSupport) seems to indicate extremely high probability there is an ongoing environmental catastrophe in motion from hog waste. #HurricaneFlorence pic.twitter.com/UbmVj0WOVj — AI6YR (@ai6yrham) September 16, 2018

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has ordered the transfer of ownership of the federal state-held company controlling Chechnya’s oil refining and petrochemical industry to the Chechen authorities. Chechen strongman and leader Ramzan Kadyrov has been seeking for years to have Chechnya own the company, according to Russian media. Putin’s decree from Tuesday orders the transfer of 100 percent of the federal government’s ownership in the company Chechenneftekhimprom to Chechnya, with the purpose to develop industrial production in the Chechen republic and use the company’s assets more efficiently. The government of the Russian Federation has two months from September 18 to ensure the handover of the federal government’s ownership to Chechnya, says the decree that Putin signed.
