Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang, a former police chief known as a tough politician and committed communist with little tolerance for dissent, died Friday aged 61 after a serious illness, state media reported. His death is not likely to dramatically alter politics in a country where the powerful communist government oversees almost every facet of society -- although the death of a sitting leader is rare. Coverage on state media was sombre Friday, with a Vietnam Television anchor in dark clothing announcing the news of the leader's death, first reported by the official Vietnam News Agency. A member of Quang's staff confirmed his death to AFP. The president had sought treatment in Japan for over a year before he was checked into hospital on Thursday afternoon after contracting a "rare virus", Nguyen Quoc Trieu, in charge of the healthcare committee for top leaders, said in state media. In office as president since April 2016 after more than four decades at the powerful Ministry of Public Security (MPS), Quang had a reputation as a hardliner. Though he held one of the country's top four positions and was officially the head of state, his role was seen as largely ceremonial, greeting visiting leaders and hosting diplomatic events in a bid to boost Vietnam's profile on the world stage. Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä expressed reservations over the idea of a common European border and coastal guard at this week's Salzburg summit, where EU heads of state and government are gathering for an informal meeting to discuss internal security, migration, and Brexit. According to Sipilä, the idea needs to be carefully examined as it's still unclear what kind of authority would be allocated to the force. The commission’s proposal for a 10,000-worker strong European border and coast guard has already received criticism: Sipilä says that border control is each country’s individual responsibility and that there are still many ”open questions” in the EU proposal. ”Now we should calmly look at whether we can strengthen member countries' own border control and what the true role of these troops would be,” he said. Establishing a common European border and coast guard would require Finland to commit a number of guards to the European initiative. Earlier this week, the Finnish Border Guard told STT news agency that it estimated it would need to hire and train more guards so that Finland would be able to provide the up to 170 border guards that have been requested for the unified EU force. The PM said that Finland is still considering its stance on the EU proposal for founding a European Border and Coast Guard. U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, who told men to “just shut up and step up” in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, might have some explaining to do about her campaign cash. Data show that Hawaii's Hirono has taken money from a fellow Democrat who has admitted hitting his wife. U.S. Sen. Tom Carper’s First State PAC donated $1,000 to Hirono’s political campaign in June, despite the Delaware lawmaker’s confession of abuse. Also receiving donations from Carper’s group was U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will decide if Kavanaugh is appointed to the nation's highest court. Feinstein has received $5,000 from the PAC so far in 2018. Carper admitted hitting his wife -- an allegation he pushed back against after it was first reported during his 1982 run for U.S. Congress -- in a 1998 interview with a local journalist Celia Cohen who published a book “Only in Delaware” that is sold by the state of Delaware on its official website, the Washington Free Beacon reported. The New York Post was the first newspaper to allege that Carper hit his wife. The story stemmed from a taped deposition the lawmaker gave as part of a child custody battle. He was accused of hitting his wife “so hard he gave her a black eye” while his children were allegedly “slapped around and bruised by Carper for doing such things as leaving the family dog on the bed.”

Niklas Krämer spotted a thief on a surveillance camera. He and a colleague then managed to catch him. But now the two colleagues are charged with unlawful detention, Swedish newspaper Expressen reports. 25-year-old Niklas and his colleagues were robbed of diesel several times a week. Last year they managed to seize and hold down one of the thieves while waiting for the police. Now they face charges themselves for unlawful detention. “Who is the villain here, we or the guy who stole from us?” says Niklas. Time and again his workplace has been hit by shameless thieves – two of whom were released even though they were arrested and confessed their crime. On 19 February last year it happened again and Niklas managed to film and catch the thief together with a colleague. But when the prosecutor now brings charges it is not the thief that is at the centre. Instead, the two colleagues are suspected of unlawful detention. When the thief was caught on camera, around midnight, Niklas and his colleague went looking for him together with the police. They found his car, but the thief was gone. When he returned early the following morning to pick up his vehicle they blocked his path, and when he refused to stop they chose to stop him with force.

A new Danish right-wing party challenging the Danish People’s Party with a harsher immigration policy is moving ahead. In a recent survey, the New Right, as they are called, received 4.6 per cent of votes, according to the Jutland post. An opinion poll from Norstat shows that the New Right is now larger than the two bourgeois parties, the Conservative People’s Party and the Liberal Alliance. The New Right almost doubled its support since August, when the party at polled 2.7 per cent of support. The parliamentary elections will be announced by the Danish government by 17 June 2019. It is believed by many experts that they will be held in March or April. The New Right party was founded in late autumn 2015 and are now campaigning as a national conservative party. With Pernille Vermund, the popular leader at the forefront, the new bourgeoisie has been passionately critical of the Danish People’s Party. They have accused the DPP of being for the economic leftist and confusing immigration issues. The main opponent to the Danish People’s Party received 17 per cent in the same survey according to Jyllandsposten. The New Right recently launched its platform with their immigration policy at the heart. They want to see a total asylum stop with migrants being expelled at their first criminal conviction. They also want to introduce the requirement that foreigners support themselves and “Muslim welfare migrants” should be deported, according to the party.

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticised countries that do no not want more ‘Europe’ and who criticise the EU on migration, Europe 1 reports. “Countries that do not want more Europe, they will no longer touch the structural funds and therefore it is necessary that next spring we have this discussion on truth,” Macron said. Without naming them, the French President referred implicitly to the Visegrad countries in central Europe that do not accept migrants. “ love Europe when it gives me money, when it makes my people prosperous, when it allows my workers to make better a living in neighbouring countries,’ but at home, will not take a single migrant, not a single refugee,” Macron said. “Countries that do not want more Frontex or solidarity will leave Schengen. Countries that don’t want more Europe will no longer structural funds,” he told journalists at a press conference in Austria. Muhammad was the most popular name for baby boys in English regions London, the West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber in 2017, government statistics show, with spelling variations in the name taking it to first place across England and Wales. Officially Oliver remains the most popular name for newborn boys across the country, with 6,259 born last year. However, it is pushed into second place by Muhammad when slight spelling variations including Mohammed and Mohammad are included, which achieve 6,510 newborns between them. The one-letter differences in spelling of the name between the three top-100 variants stem from the transliteration of مُحمّد‎ from Arabic into the Latin alphabet, which can be imprecise. Even alone, Muhammad was the 10th most popular name in England and Wales last year, having slipped two places since 2016 but rising 28 places since 2007. India called off on Friday a planned meeting of its foreign minister with her Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly later this month. India has decided to drop the idea of the proposed meeting, the first such high-level talk planned in years between the nuclear rivals, to protest about the killing of Indian security personnel and the glorification of a militant and militancy by Pakistan, India’s foreign office said in a statement. The ministry had announced the meeting after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, suggesting their foreign ministers meet in New York. But the statement said that since its announcement “two deeply disturbing developments have taken place”. It cited “the latest brutal killings of our security personnel by Pakistan-based entities” and the recent release of postage stamps by Pakistan which it said glorified “a terrorist and terrorism”. Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi blamed Indian politics. “Some elements don’t want resumption of talks between India and Pakistan. The elections in India are near and it appears that internal politics have influenced the government,” he told the local Samaa TV channel. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley late Friday night granted another extension to Christine Blasey Ford to decide on whether she will testify to the committee. The new deadline was unclear, but Ford had requested that a 10 p.m. ET Friday deadline be extended until Saturday. Ford has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, citing an incident that she said occurred decades ago, when both were in high school. Grassley issued his latest extension decision in a tweet addressed to Kavanaugh, adding that he hopes the judge can “understand” his reasoning behind the delay. Judge Kavanaugh I just granted another extension to Dr Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w the statement she made last week to testify to the senate She shld decide so we can move on I want to hear her. I hope u understand. It’s not my normal approach to b indecisive — ChuckGrassley (@ChuckGrassley) September 22, 2018 Just before midnight ET, Grassley tweeted: “Judge Kavanaugh I just granted another extension to Dr Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w the statement she made last week to testify to the senate She shld decide so we can move on I want to hear her. I hope u understand. It’s not my normal approach to b indecisive.” With all the extensions we give Dr Ford to decide if she still wants to testify to the Senate I feel like I’m playing 2nd trombone in the judiciary orchestra and Schumer is the conductor — ChuckGrassley (@ChuckGrassley) September 22, 2018 Grassley later added: “With all the extensions we give Dr Ford to decide if she still wants to testify to the Senate I feel like I’m playing 2nd trombone in the judiciary orchestra and Schumer is the conductor.”

The Trump administration is working on a second summit between President Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “There’s still a little bit of work to do left to make sure that the conditions are right and that the two leaders are put in the position where we could make substantial progress,” Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News. “I’m hoping I’ll be back in Pyongyang before too long to make some more progress. And if that’s the case, I’m very hopeful that Chairman Kim and President Trump will get a chance to meet in the near future as well.” More at: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/09/21/pompeo-trump-may-hold-2nd-meeting-with-north-koreas-kim-jong-un-in-near-future.html

A new video chat device set to be unveiled by Facebook will reportedly use a camera to follow users inside their homes. Known as “Portal,” the video communication system, according to Cheddar‘s Alex Heath, will be similar in function to other devices such as the Amazon Echo Show. Utilizing facial recognition technology, Portal will recognize and track users as they move throughout any room where the device is situated. While the device was originally intended to be revealed in May, numerous scandals involving Facebook’s data practices, Heath notes, resulted in the company cancelling its plans. Although a privacy shutter will be included in Portal, reports suggest Facebook only added the feature in response to growing public concern over the tech giant. Some are raising eyebrows after spotting an ad on Twitter advertising a pro-female genital mutilation stance. “Sorry, what?! @Twitter is carrying an ad FOR female genital mutilation? #FGM,” said Ingrid Srinath, Director of the Centre for Social Impact & Philanthropy at Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana, India. Srinath attached a screenshot of the ad, promoted by a group called Dawoodi Bohra Women for Religious Freedom. Bohra is a part of India that is heavily populated with Muslims. “‘My daughters have also undergone khafz, and they’re growing up as perfectly as other children their age. As a mother, I can never do anything to harm them,’ says Arwa Sohangpurwala, Chartered Accountant, Kolkata,” the ad said.

A 26-year-old female stormed a RiteAid distribution center with a pistol this morning in Aberdeen, MD, killing three before turning the weapon on herself, according to police. “Our suspect is a lone female suspect, age 26, who had a last known address in Baltimore County. She has died at the hospital from fatal injury, a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said. The shooter has been identified by multiple news outlets as Snochia Moseley, a disgruntled temporary employee who also happens to be a black female. Normally in the case of a mass shooting incident like this, Twitter would be ablaze with calls for gun control measures, inane nonsense about terrorism, labels of toxic masculinity and dismantling gun rights groups like the NRA. But something is different about today’s shooting: it was not carried out by a white male, leading to deafening silence from the usual suspects in the anti-gun world. Moms Demand Action, a gun control group partnered with far left Everytown for Gun Safety, has been silent except for a generic “condolences” message posted to its Twitter page. The group’s founder, ever-outspoken Shannon Watts, has not said a word about the shooting on her active Twitter feed.

Here’s something you don’t see every day: Chicago’s progressive Readeraligned with conservative Breitbart. Both had articles Wednesday slamming the Obama Center to be built in Chicago’s Jackson Park. And everybody in between, it seems, is upset with the proposed center for one reason or another. The community organizer has managed to inspire unusual unity: Fiscal conservatives worried about our insolvent state object to how some $200 million was quietly appropriated in Illinois’ recently enacted budget for roadways around the center. Federal taxpayers will reimburse Illinois for 80% of that money, which was the subject of our recent Wall Street Journal article. Local folks have long objected, claiming the Obama Foundation, which is building the center, isn’t directing enough jobs and benefits towards them. No surprise. When I visited the site a few weeks ago it looked like most of the work was being done by the usual Chicago union white guys. The Nation earlier criticized the absence of some form of community benefits agreement.

It's now confirmed that Google's long suspected assistance to the Communist government of China to censor and monitor its citizens' online activity runs deeper and is more proactive that initially thought. The Intercept published a bombshell report based on internal Google whistle-blower testimony which shows the internet giant plans to launch a search engine for China with censorship capabilities built into it, which provides a backdoor monitoring platform allowing government authorities to track users' entire search history and even their location. The search system is code-named "Dragonfly," according to a confidential memo outlining the project that circulated inside the company — the contents of which have been leaked to The Intercept by an engineer who worked on the search engine. The Google engineer said that employees were forced by Google bosses to delete the memo as it was authored and circulated among a group voicing concern and dissent over the planned search engine. The Intercept summarizes the confidential memo's contents as follows: The memo, authored by a Google engineer who was asked to work on the project, disclosed that the search system, code-named Dragonfly, would require users to log in to perform searches, track their location — and share the resulting history with a Chinese partner who would have “unilateral access” to the data. By requiring users to log-in to perform a simple search, system administrators can immediately identify the person behind the search and their profile; and a Chinese partner would then have the capability to “selectively edit search result pages” with few limitations, according to the memo. The "Chinese partner" — thought to be a private company working in tandem with the Chinese government — will store user information in a database on servers in Taiwan. A Dragonfly search engine prototype is under development for use as an app on Android and iOS devices, which would require sign-in. According to the leaked memo a user's searches will be linked up with their personal phone number, and thus even their movements and IP addresses associated with the device will be stored. The confidential "dissent" memo which Google executives have reportedly been relentless in attempting to stamp out accuses the company of creating "spy tools" on behalf of the Chinese government in order to monitor citizens' activity. The Intercept report further describes the specially designed system as removing searches related to democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest.

Perhaps another factor bolstering GOP steadfastness on the issue is the Friday revalation that Ford's current political adviser - former Obama and Clinton White House official Ricky Seidman, had allegedly been working on Ford's situation since July - outlining a plan on a newly released audio tape to use the allegation as political fodder to derail Kavanaugh's confirmation, and if unsuccessful, at least politically harm Republicans during midterms. One might think that Ford, an ostensibly intelligent PhD, would have considered the likelihood of her eventual Congressional testimony the moment she decided to involve California legislators in her claims prior to the 11th hour of Kavanaugh's confirmation.
